The New Toronto Cooperative Nursery School is a well-established not for profit, community-based preschool in southern Etobicoke.

Our nursery school provides a safe, stimulating play-based learning environment where children are offered a wide variety of age appropriate opportunities.

Parents play an integral role in the day to day operation of the program, and as Board members who oversee the administration of the school.


Hours:5 mornings a week (8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) plus preparation and meeting time, as well as ad hoc administrative duties

Starting Salary:
$23 per hour

  • Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE, in good standing)
  • Twoyear ECE diploma
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in a licensed childcare setting with a relevant age group
  • Knowledge of the Child Care and Early Years Act and its implementation in a nursery school setting
  • Ability to plan and a deliver an inquiry and playbased early learning curriculum
  • Clear Police Record Check (vulnerable sector)
  • Clear TB test and up to date immunization record
  • Current First Aid/CPR Level C training
  • Food Handler certification
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal and relationship building skills; ability to lead as well as establish rapport and excellent communication with parents, staff and volunteers, Ministry and City officials, and other community based organizations
  • Excellent organizational skills with an ability to manage emergencies and non‐routine situations in a calm and supportive manner

Experience:

  • Licensed childcare setting: minimum 2 years (preferred)

Job Description and Responsibilities:

  • Have overall responsibility with the Teaching Assistant for the daily operation of the nursery school program, including various administrative duties.
  • Work closely with the Teaching Assistant and Board of Directors to ensure the smooth organizational functioning of the nursery school.
  • Be responsible for all nursery school equipment and supplies, in conjunction with the Teaching Assistant, always aiming to enlist the resourcefulness and creativity of each parent (while drawing upon the education and experience of the teachers).
  • Supervise staff and volunteers in carrying out the daily program.
  • Conduct regular curriculum planning meetings with the Teaching Assistant to plan and evaluate the program, giving due consideration to suggestions from the parents. They shall attend staff meetings with the Teaching Assistant for program planning and evaluation. Both meetings are to be held outside of regular school hours.
  • Responsible for daily general communication regarding programming and the overall operation of the school to the Board, the City or the Lawn Bowling Club (if necessary), and general membership. This includes writing and distributing monthly newsletters or calendars, working closely with various committees within the Membership and Board of Directors.
  • Attend all general meetings, held at times other than regular school operating hours. This attendance would be in an advisory and nonvoting capacity.
  • Attend board meetings upon request of the board members.
  • Keep parents aware of students' progress through verbal communication and/or written progress notes as requested by the Board and the General Membership.
  • Prepare the classroom prior to school start and at school end (three days of setup and three days of winddown).
  • Prepare the classroom on a daily basis, excluding those activities designated to other staff members.
  • Prepare monthly school calendar and snack schedule, ensuring that all allergies are accommodated.
  • Maintain a personal daily attendance record, as well as records of the children's attendance.
  • Tries to support extracurricular nursery school functions, but is not obligated to fundraise.
  • Update the inventory of supplies and equipment as needed throughout the year and for insurance purposes. This includes an initial inventory of supplies in September, update and organization of supplies during March, and final inventory in June. This is done outside of regular classroom time.
  • Request and order supplies as needed with the Teaching Assistant.
  • Comply with all medical requirements of the _Child Care and Early Years Act_.
  • Ensure first aid equipment is uptodate and materials are current. They will also be responsible for reporting to the general Membership any communicable diseases that may be present in the school.
  • Responsible for reporting to the Board any hazardous conditions, situations or unsafe equipment and shall have the right to refuse to use any such equipment.
