Department summary


Center of Excellence for Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research (CEGIIR) at the University of Alberta has a focus on research related to characterization of a retroviral infection in patients with autoimmune liver disease using patient samples and animal models.


Position summary


The role of the Research Assistant is to provide laboratory related assistance to the research group (technicians, post docs, graduate students) under the guidance of the Principal Investigator.

The research lab has a translational program that focuses on studying immune responses to betaretroviral infection in patients with cancers and autoimmune diseases as well as mouse models of disease.

This position has been made available and will be supported by an Alberta Health grant to Dr. Mason.

Hours of work are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The weekly schedule of experiments and tasks is discussed at a 2-hour lab meeting that is typically once a week

Duties

  • Lab supply stock inventory, go to Biochemistry store for lab supplies
  • General Lab Maintenance including autoclaving waste and getting glassware cleaned
  • Biohazardous waste management (Autoclaving), restock consumables (Pipettes, Flasks etc.)
  • Refilling cleaning reagents (Bleach, Ethanol)
  • Reviews protocols/Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) pertaining to analysis to be performed
  • Monitors experimental results, collects data, compiles data electronically and in log book, conducts preliminary analysis using various software programs
  • Attends weekly Lab meetings to present experiment progress and data/results to laboratory team
  • Maintains clinical sample database
  • Organizes hardcopy and computer files related to ongoing studies
  • Assists with manuscript preparation (e.g. formatting) and submission
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards and university regulations
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of reagents and/or solutions in the laboratory
  • Performs a number of basic lab techniques such as lymphocyte isolation, lymphocyte stimulation studies, ELISA, ELISpot, Flow cytometry and varrious immune assays
  • Interacts with other laboratory and research personnel on common and related projects
  • Performs other technical duties as assigned
  • Receives information from team to maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Qualifications

  • High school diploma plus a two year diploma in Biological Sciences Technology
  • Excellent writing and critical thinking skills along with strong interviewing skills
  • Ability to work autonomously with little supervision and within a multidisciplinary research team
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
