The University of Alberta Faculty of Agriculture, Life, and Environmental Sciences, located in Edmonton, Alberta conducts a robust research program that provides solutions to global challenges in the areas of agriculture and food, the environment, community and individual well-being, and bioresource innovation.


Position summary
This is a Research Assistant position.

The purpose is to provide research and administration support to a number of community-based participatory research projects in collaboration with several Indigenous communities in the province.

The related projects are aimed at working with community partners to develop, implement, and evaluate community-based supports and interventions that foster healthier pregnancies and families.


Duties

Coordination of research projects

  • Works collaboratively with the PI or a designate to oversee, plan and conduct activities consistent with research goals.
  • Assists the PI with all aspects of organization, community engagement, data collection, data extraction (knowledge syntheses), data analysis.
  • Assists PI in professional activities as required.

Facilitation of data collection

  • Participates in data collection (qualitative and quantitative).
  • Provides regular communication with the research/community sites and University partners.
  • Maintains (ethics and operational approvals) when needed and ensures adherence to all policies and procedures to maintain clearance privileges.
  • Consults with the research teams and community advisory groups regarding revisions to the research protocols, data collection procedures, and other research processes.
  • Assists with the recruitment of research participants when needed.
  • Assists with the data collection activities including qualitative (interviews with research participants, focus groups, participant observation, consultation meetings) and quantitative (surveys, questionnaires, clinical chart reviews, administrative data)
  • Enters and cleans quantitative data in analysis software such as SPSS or similar.
  • Conducts initial analysis of quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Organizes and participates in meetings of the research team and write meeting summaries.

Management of communications

  • Assists with the implementation of an ongoing communication system with project partners.
  • Travels to Indigenous communities and facilitates community engagement, partnership development, meetings, and discussions
  • Organizes, attends and provides regular updates in both regular and episodic team meetings with core research teams as well as other meetings when required.
  • Assists with activities such as scheduling and preparing for program presenters, meetings, and community events that highlight research projects.
  • Assists with organizing workshop gatherings with community members and/or health care professionals.
  • Assists with workshop follow up activities including writing reports and preparing presentation materials.
  • Assists PI with preparing interim and final reports for funding agencies.

Coordination of data management and research analysis

  • Assists with research data management in collaboration with the PI or a designate; keeping digital files well organized and properly backed up. Has regular contact with the thirdparty providers in terms of storing and hosting our data.
