**Working for the Department/Faculty

The Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases (MCVD) Laboratory in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science is recruiting a Research Assistant for a international/university collaborative project between the Center of Molecular Immunology, University of Havana, Cuba and the University of Alberta.

The position will be hosted in Edmonton at the North campus of University of Alberta and be physically on site in wet laboratories of the Li Ka Shing Centre for Health and Innovation.

**Position

Under the direction of the Trust Holder/ Principal Investigator of the Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases Laboratory, the Research Assistant position will assist with day-to-day operations in a bio-medical research laboratory setting.

The role will require both independent and team working environments and some mentor and supervisory expectations with graduate students and other research staff.

A wide scope of bio-medical research skills will be required including the use of molecular, cell and integrated biological systems.

The project(s) will have a meaningful impact on understanding and developing new therapeutics for vascular diseases.

The projects intersect with a number of principal investigators as part of the Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases Laboratory group and will engage with a unique research bench to bedside mandate offering innovative opportunities.

**Duties

  • Collaborate with research staff and colleagues at the University of Cuba and the University of Alberta
  • Perform biomedical laboratory procedures with varied methodological approaches
  • Assist with data analysis
  • Operate various laboratory equipment to conduct experiments
  • Assist and/or supervise graduate students and/or research staff
  • Assist with maintenance and upkeep of research laboratory space (e.g certifications) and research equipment
  • Assist with relevant preclinical models of research
  • Maintenance of research consumables and supplies.
  • Performs other researchrelated duties as assigned by the supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Biomedical or related Sciences
  • Experience in the following bench work areas preferred: lipid and protein biochemical analyses, functional metabolism testing, analytical experience e.g. spectroscopy, cell culture techniques, general cell biochemistry techniques, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, ELISAs etc
  • Have experience in theoretical biomedical research areas including vascular disease(s), immunemetabolism, and lipid metabolism
  • Animal husbandry experience
  • Excellent communication skills including written and verbal in English (required), and bilingual in Spanish (preferred)
  • Excellent timemanagement and organizational skills
  • Selfmotivated, can work independently as well as within a team setting
  • Confident with research computer skills including MS Office, Google Suite, graphics and statistical packages
  • Experience with Institutional policies in laboratory safety, biohazard and associated certifications and regulations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher degree in Sciences (preferred)
  • Second language (an asset): Fluent in Spanish (written and verbal)
