Strengthening and deepening key international partnerships is a significant priority for the University of Toronto as part of our overall academic mission.

The Office of the Vice-President, International (OVPI) engages with institutions in regions, countries and cities of strategic priority and leverages international opportunities for research, scholarship, learning and mobility.

By providing leadership on international initiatives, OVPI develops and maintains key international partnerships.


Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, International Engagement and Impact, and working in close collaboration with the Associate Vice Presidents International Student Experience (AVP ISE) and International Partnerships (AVP IP).

The incumbent is responsible for providing leadership to implement the University of Toronto's International Strategic Plan with a particular focus on specific regions, including co-leading strategies across divisions and the development of strategic partnerships.

This includes developing a strategic approach to internationalization across a range of international initiatives and activities in research and learning, providing strategic advice to senior leaders of the University on activities, trends, opportunities and strategies for mitigating potential risks, implementing international relations plans and priorities as determined by senior leadership, negotiation and assessment of university-wide international agreements, and managing external and internal relationships and events the University has with international partners, developing and implementing strategies tied to particular countries.

The Director manages a team whose regional foci include the Indian Subcontinent, Latin America and the Caribbean, USA, and Europe/UK.

The Director, International Relations is charged with spearheading specific strategic international efforts and activities across the University.

The Director, International Relations also builds, works with, and maintains relationships with local international/diaspora communities, other academic institutions, international government offices, private sector organizations, international organizations and non-government organizations.

The incumbent works with subject matter experts, and provides strong analytical, facilitative, and broad administrative perspectives and support in the performance of duties.

Master's degree in a related field or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.


Seven years of progressively senior administrative experience in a related field with a broad knowledge of University procedure, policies and people.

Familiarity with business culture an asset.

High level of computer literacy required, including databases, excel and word.

This individual must have a track record of having developed international strategies for highly complex organizations. Must be able to identify and understand emerging, policy issues as well as set and manage priorities.

Must have developed project management and event planning skills as well as the ability to meet tight deadlines and to perform well under pressure.

Able to deal confidentially with information that has legal and political implications. Must be able to work independently with limited direction.

Full-Time

This is a term position ending August 31, 2025. Administrative / Managerial

however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
