Working closely with the Vice-President, Research & Dean, Graduate Studies (VPR/DGS) and reporting to the Director, Research Services (DRS), the Research Grants Officer supports the development and coordination of research grant proposals, providing strategic advice and substantive feedback to faculty researchers to help strengthen their proposals, reviewing proposals for compliance with University and sponsor policies, and contributing to the University's objectives to expand research capacity and funding success.


Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategies to increase participation and success rates for identified funding opportunities, providing oneonone consultations to faculty and associated team members with the aim of improving the strength and competitiveness of funding proposals
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to faculty researchers in the identification of appropriate funding opportunities based on their research interests, goals, and funding needs
  • Plan, coordinate, develop, and deliver presentations and workshops on competitive proposal writing and related topics, university and sponsor guidelines, and details of specific grant opportunities
  • Provide strategic advice and substantive written feedback on draft proposals to strengthen their chance of success
  • Assist in the preparation of large scale institutional research grant proposals and reporting, including text, budget development, diagram and graph development, and slide presentations
  • Provide support to the DRS in the implementation of strategic and institutional researchrelated initiatives
  • Provide information and guidance to faculty members regarding postaward grant administration based on established internal university policies, sponsor guidelines, and internal processes, and/or direct enquiries to appropriate university service provider, including Research Accounting, Procurement or People and Culture
  • Support postaward administrative functions, including liaising with the Finance Office to activate research accounts, tracking of key milestones and reporting deadlines, and closing accounts at the end of the project
  • Maintain project data within OCAD U's research administration system, and generate statistical reports as required
  • Liaise with representatives of other institutions and funding agency staff regarding the interpretation of agency/institutional guidelines and policies; serve as an advocate on behalf of faculty with agency/institutional staff as needed
  • Plan, coordinate and represent OCAD U Research at external researchrelated events and conferences, as directed by the DRS
  • Support the VPR and the DRS with related duties contributing to the successful operation of the Office of Research

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree or equivalent, with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience, preferably in a postsecondary environment; Research Administration Certificate an asset
  • Familiarity with research environments, including policies and regulations of provincial and federal funding agencies, in particular Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
  • Familiarity with research and researchcreation methodologies in an art and design context
  • Demonstrated experience with grant writing and budget development
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills with the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy while working with people both within and outside of the University
  • Excellent technical computing skills, including the ability to create documents, forms and templates using Microsoft Office Suite and appropriate ADOBE programs and, a demonstrated ability to learn inhouse programs and systems
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and work well with high volume, pressure and changing priorities
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to take initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and participate collaboratively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and diversity, and proven ability to work effectively with a diverse population
  • Flexibility in work hours; must be willing and able to work occasional evenings, as required

Compensation:
OPSEU Unit I, Appendix A, Grade A5; $63,051.73 to $82,866.93 per annum

Hours of Work:
Monday to Friday, for a total of 35 hours per week.
