Your opportunity:

Under the general direction of the Finance Director andworking closely with the Director, Research Administration, the Research Grant and Finance Officer will be responsible for managing research funds, operating accounts, contracts at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy. The Research Grant and Finance Officer acts as a point of contact concerning a broad range of financial matters requiring the provision of information to principal investigators, post doctoral fellows, and research and administrative staff regarding financial, research and employment policies. As well, the incumbent will be responsible for promoting and supporting a culture of research through strong financial management.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Forecasting, planning and monitoring multiple complex budgets
  • Interpreting and applying policies and procedures when making independent decisions
  • Monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts
  • Preparing purchase orders
  • Obtaining required authorizations and signatures to process financial documents
  • Processing payroll
  • Verifying that provisions of applicable collective agreements and/or policies are applied appropriately
  • Keeping well-informed on changes to policies, procedures, collective agreements, and applicable legislated requirements

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree with specialization in Finance or Accounting or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum four years of related experience in financial management and grant administration in a research and/or academic setting
  • Minimum of two years of experience managing research grants and contracts
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge working directly with granting agencies (including MITACS, NSERC, NSF and OCE), and interpreting/applying granting agency rules and regulations
  • Experience in monitoring and processing funding accounts, coordinating research grant funding application submission and tracking project progress
  • Proven experience with compiling, researching, investigating and analyzing financial information and making recommendations based on outcome of analyses
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of general accounting principles and procedures
  • Highly developed computer skills including advanced proficiency with Excel, Word, and accounting software
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills with the ability to professionally communicate complex financial procedures to Principal Investigators, Post Doctoral Fellows, research and administrative staff
  • Strong quantitative, accounting/financial, analytical, planning, problem solving and decision making skills
  • Demonstrated business acumen, attention to detail and solid time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, meet competing deadlines and multi-tasking.

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Completion or working towards a professional accounting designation
  • Knowledge and experience with Financial Information Systems (FIS), Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), and Research Information Systems (RIS)
  • Familiarity with the University's financial and research policies and procedures
