Land Trust Manager

The Nova Scotia Working Woodlands Trust (NSWWT) is an exciting new initiative that marries traditional conservation and small woodland stewardship.

We aim to uphold a rich diversity of forest values and provide unique solutions to maintain the long-term stewardship legacy of landowners through ecological forestry and conservation through working forest conservation easements.

We work with landowners to maintain their stewardship legacies and conserve forest health for the benefit of the community, environment, and future land stewards through developing, monitoring, and enforcing community easements.

Through working forest conservation easements, we uphold landowner wishes and ultimately help facilitate forest connectivity, carbon storage, and wildlife habitat.

The NSWWT has been incubated through the Medway Community Forest Co-op (MCFC).

The MCFC is Eastern Canada's first Crown land community forest initiative, based in the rural community of Caledonia, Nova Scotia.

The two organizations share an office space, and some staff responsibilities span across both.


The Land Trust Manager works with the MCFC/NSWWT Executive Director on the overall development of the Trust, leading private woodlot owner outreach, managing funding allocation and budgeting, and developing legal agreements and policies.


Leadership

  • Under the guidance of the ED and Board of Directors, help facilitate the development a vision and strategic plan with longterm goals and objectives to guide the organization.
  • Oversee the development of programs and projects including business planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization's programs and services to support the strategic direction of the organization.

Primary Duties

  • Lead landowner engagement and recruitment and act as the main point of contact for landowners seeking to place easements on their properties.
  • Lead development, negotiations, execution and reporting for variations grants and funding agreements.
  • Work with consultants as necessary to develop marketing and outreach materials and strategic plan.
  • Develop and manage social media presence and website content.
  • Engage in and facilitate working sessions with woodlot management partners, and coordinate efforts to provide forest management services for woodlot owners with regional woodlot service providers.
  • Maintain easement database and coordinate annual monitoring surveys with partner organizations and NSWWT seasonal staff.
  • Assist in building forest carbon offset sales agreements and developing other creative solutions to generate revenue for longterm endowment costs.
  • Work with NSWWT lawyers to finalize legal framework for easements and forest carbon offset agreements.
  • Act as NSWWT representative on various forest and conservation committees and participate in sector events.
  • Develop and oversee acquisition strategy targeting woodlots with special and unique stewardship values.
  • In collaboration with the ED and Treasurer, assist with the development of annual budgets and track expenditures for the MCFC administrator.

Educational & Experience Requirements:

  • Mandatory Qualifications:_
  • Strong interpersonal skills and exercises sound judgement in decision making
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask.
  • Nova Scotia Class 5 Driver's license or equivalent and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Preferred Qualifications:_
  • Experience with land acquisition, conservation easements, Other Effective Conservation Measures (OECMs), or similar private land protection mechanisms.
  • Experience with working with a variety of government, forest industry and NGO partners on collaborative projects.
  • Experience developing contracts and working with consultants.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Compensation_: Salary for the NSWWT Manager position starts at $60,000 per year with additions negotiable based on experience and qualifications. The NSWWT offers benefits to all employees and a flexible work schedule.

Location:
