The Royal Alberta Museum is responsible for the overall care of the objects and specimens in its collections holdings. The RAM's Collections Services Unit leads, advises and directs preservation and conservation related projects.

Role Responsibilities:

The Royal Alberta Museum is seeking a Collections Technician for a six month wage position.

Reporting to the Head of Conservation and working with the conservation and collections management teams, this position will contribute to the remediation of collections objects impacted by mold at our collections warehouses.

Key responsibilities in this role include but are not limited to:

  • Complete preliminary condition assessments for objects affected by mold;
  • Assist conservation staff in identifying any special conditions that could affect treatment;
  • Assist with object packing, transport and object logistics;
  • Carry out rehousing of collections objects as needed;
  • Perform mold remediation (i.e. cleaning collections objects) as instructed/recommended by Conservation staff;
  • Complete or assist in the completion of conservation documentation either directly in the collections database or separately;
  • Ensure object locations are updated and tracked.
Demonstrated experience working in a museum or other cultural institution including:

  • Collections objects handling in a museum context;
  • Collections objects moving in a museum context;
  • Familiarity with museum documentation process, including use of collections management database systems (knowledge of Gallery Systems
  • TMS considered an asset);
  • Standard First Aid certification considered an asset.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of use of manual driven material handling equipment (pallet jacks, push carts, etc.)
  • Use all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required and instructed;
  • Assist Conservation staff in conducting object assessments in order to develop a long term warehouse improvement plan.

Qualifications:

Qualifications for this position include:

  • A twoyear technical diploma in a museum studies and/or conservation or a relevant degree or conservation certificate;
Or equivalent as described below.

  • Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Additional Job Skills:

  • Ability to follow specific instructions understand the necessity to ask for clarification when needed;
  • Must be able to work effectively as a team under the guidance of Museum Staff;
  • Ability to handle delicate, valuable objects and hazardous materials with care.
  • Manual dexterity and ability to undertake detailed work
  • Problem solving strategies employing equipment and ideas to safely move large items (personnel, object and equipment safety).
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds;
  • Adherence to OHS rules and safety guidelines

This competition will be used to fill in two wage positions what will be assisting the museum staff for the period of 6 months.

Your hours of work will be determined by your supervisor. Please note that you will only be paid for actual hours worked. This position is required to work daytime, evening, weekends and statutory holidays. This operational schedule may change and this position's schedule would change accordingly. Employees are expected to be available a minimum number of shifts per week.
