The Royal Alberta Museum (RAM) is the largest museum in western Canada and one of the top museums in Canada.

Located in the Arts District in downtown Edmonton, we collect, preserve, research, interpret, and exhibit objects and specimens related to the heritage of Alberta's people and natural environment.


Role Responsibilities:

The Royal Alberta Museum is seeking an individual with expertise in cataloguing museum collections to assist in collections care. The museum has diverse collections in both human history and natural history.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating and entering data into the museum's collections databases, mainly The Museum System (TMS), including:
  • ensuring records are complete and accurate
- inventorying, photographing, measuring, and describing objects and specimens

  • Compiling and documenting information for specimens, such as locational data, habitat, and species status
  • Compiling and documenting information for objects, such as historical data, or information on use or purpose
  • Transcribing information provided by donors or recorded in field notebooks and associated datasheets into object or specimen records
  • Evaluating by observation objects and specimens and flagging any that may need conservation work

Qualifications:


Two-year diploma in museum studies or in a field in science or humanities related to the museum's collection areas, and two years related experience in a museum or similar institution.


  • A degree in museum studies or in a field in science or humanities related to the museum's collection areas is preferred.
  • Experience with handling material culture objects, including delicate or valuable items, or experience with handling natural history specimens, including life sciences and earth sciences items.
  • Experience with handling both material culture objects and natural history specimens is an asset.
  • Experience with dissecting and compound microscopes is an asset.
  • Experience with TMS (The Museum System) is an asset.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and proven track record of working effectively independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to follow specific instructions, ask for clarification or assistance when needed, and to work effectively with curatorial staff.
  • Ability to adhere to any safety or handling protocols for specific collections or objects.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, a First Aid certificate.
  • Must be able to lift boxes or objects weighing up to 30 lbs.
  • Must possess a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license.

Work location is the Royal Alberta Museum, Edmonton, Alberta

Some work may take place at off-site storage locations in and near Edmonton.

Fleet vehicles are available for work at off-site locations.
