The University of Alberta Library seeks up to three (3) full time Special Collections Metadata Technicians with strong technical and analytical skills and customer service orientation to join our team in Metadata Strategies.

These positions include a casual appointment with an end date of March 31, 2024.

Location - This role primarily takes place at North Campus Edmonton.

Position:


Reporting to the Head, Metadata Strategies, the Metadata Technician is responsible for ensuring proper arrangement and description of unpublished and ephemeral materials related to the history of the Prairie Provinces for Bruce Peel Special Collections (BPSC).

Description of resources is carried out according to in-house guidelines based on the Rules for Archival Description (RAD), and entered into the Library's Access to Memory (AtoM) discovery platform.


This is a specialized position contributing to the stewardship of this world-class collection of rare and unique materials, and requires independent research, judgment, and contact with various individuals and teams within the Library and occasionally beyond.


Duties

  • Assesses resources for placement within existing collections, or creates new collections
  • Analyses resources and describes them according to inhouse guidelines, carrying out research as needed
  • Adds resource descriptions for access to and discovery within AtoM, either individually or using batch ingest processes
  • In collaboration with BPSC and Metadata Strategies staff, completes targeted projects in support of upcoming exhibitions, valuable donor relationships, and digitization
  • Consults with the BPSC conservator to ensure that archival materials are appropriately housed for longterm preservation
  • Processes collections by making them "shelf ready" (e.g., labels folders, places items into mylar sleeves/acidfree folders, creates book flags, etc.)
  • Edits resource descriptions in AtoM and other Library systems to correct errors as reported or encountered in the course of everyday work
  • Acts as a resource person within Metadata Strategies with respect to special collections resource organization and description and fosters effective workflows across the unit
  • Regularly reviews and analyzes metadata, and recommends and carries out revisions
  • Designs and completes targeted metadata enhancement and cleanup projects
  • In collaboration with others in Metadata Strategies and BPSC, reviews practices, guidelines, and workflows, and recommends changes to enhance effectiveness
  • Develops and maintains procedures and documentation to support the above activities

Qualifications

  • Two years postsecondary education in a relevant discipline such as information science, library technology, computing science, humanities computing, digital archives, digital humanities is required.
  • One year related experience with metadata creation, manipulation, assessment; metadata modeling; metadata serialization formats such as XML (Extensible Markup Language), RDF (Resource Description Framework), JSON (JavaScript Object Notation); related experience may also include creating AtoM or related finding aids in a special collections library, university archives, or related professional environment such as museums.
  • Knowledge of common metadata standards such as DC (Dublin Core), MODS (Metadata Object Description Schema), , controlled vocabularies such as LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings), TGM (Thesaurus for Graphic Materials), Provincial Archives of Alberta Subject Headings (PAASH).
  • Familiarity with metadata manipulation tools such as OpenRefine and Excel.
  • Broad understanding of the role metadata plays in ensuring discovery, access, and preservation of library resources.
  • Ability to work in a complex and highly dynamic environment requiring expertise in multiple standards and platforms, and to learn new standards and tools quickly and effectively.
  • Strong written, verbal, and technical skills are required, with a demonstrated ability to clearly describe and respond to complex situations.
