Job Summary
Supports the Operations and Assistant Managers in day to day facility operations. Assists the Senior OR Technician in coordinating operating room surgeries and animal husbandry activities. Prepares operating room and surgical equipment, and performs anesthesia and technical paraveterinary skills. Responsible for health monitoring, record keeping, pre-, peri- and post-procedure care, medicating and minor procedures of laboratory animals. ​

Organizational Status
The incumbent reports directly to the Assistant Manager and Operations Manager. Assists and interacts with operating room and husbandry technicians. Assists and trains staff, research assistants, students and investigators.

Work Performed

Training, guidance, and support to Lab Assistants, Research Assistant T1 and T2 positions
- Monitoring and reporting any staff or facility issues
- Assist senior management, researchers, and veterinarians with facility operations
- Animal handling and manipulations (IV, IP, IM, SQ, per os)
- Animal observation and maintenance
- Maintaining inventory and equipment
- Troubleshoots equipment and systems problems
- Operates and maintains highly specialized equipment requiring extensive training
- Assist or perform surgical procedures, testing, and collection of tissue samples
- Monitoring of physiological parameters and animal well-being
- Maintaining computerized records (Mosaic) and completing reports
- Assist in general care and husbandry of mice and rats
- General housekeeping and maintenance of the facility and equipment
- Available in case of emergencies (after-hours)
- Participating in continuing education programs
- Performing other related duties

Serves as surgical/anesthesia technician to surgeons and research personnel. Responsible for performing specialized paraveterinary procedures such as: preparation of instruments, supplies and surgical animals; anesthetizing, including drug calculations, animal sedation, anesthetic induction, intubation, anesthetic monitoring; diagnostics; nursing care and surgical assistance
- Oversees the wellbeing of anesthetized surgical animals and adjusts anesthesia, narcotics, medications and fluid therapy depending on the animal's status
- Provides technical services to investigators, researchers and animal lab users such as tissue/whole organ harvesting, blood sampling, pre-, peri-, post-procedure care, injections, euthanasia, minor procedures, venous and arterial catheterizations
- Maintains controlled substance log and inventory per Health Canada regulation requirements
- Performs rounds to observe and check the physical health and well-being of laboratory animals; collects data; writes health reports; isolates infected or ill animals and reports to veterinarian
- Recommends and advises investigators and technicians on, and administers, health treatments
- Checks inventory and orders facility supplies such as compressed gasses, animal food, bedding and nutritional supplements
- Educates and assists staff, investigators, research assistants and students
- Provides after hours and weekend intensive care of surgical animals
- Stays current in new research techniques and developments through continuing education, maintains Registered Animal Health Technician status (if applicable), as well as national and regional CALAS membership
- Performs animal husbandry such as care, feeding, watering, changing cages of large and small laboratory animals
- Cleans and sanitizes animal cages, bottles, racks, and other equipment using rack cage washer and wall autoclaves

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The incumbent will be depended upon to ensure the smooth, efficient, and effective daily operation of assigned areas. Judgment must be exercised to alleviate pain or suffering by the animals. Provides necessary elements to make the animal's environment as enriched and comfortable as possible. The Operations Manager oversees work; incorrect decisions could result in deterioration of animal health and/ or disruption or ruination of research study, as well as animal unit non-compliance.​

Supervision Received
Reports to Assistant Manager and Operations Manager. Consults with manager in the case of new, complex tasks.​

Supervision Given
The incumbent may assist surgical and husbandry technicians at lower levels.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
