The Research Technician is a key staff member of the Borgland Family Brain Tissue and DNA Bank core facility and will be responsible for overseeing several complex activities including:
- Managing the patient database and creating new Biobank SOPS and research protocols;
- Overseeing rigorous ethical guidelines and scheduling the collection of derived bio specimens from surgical suites, hospital clinics, and external laboratories;
- Transporting and processing bio specimens in a safe and timely manner;
- Overseeing the operations, testing, and maintenance of core Biobank equipment.
The Research Technician will be responsible for:
- Overseeing and managing the Biobank patient database, including data entry, extraction, and archiving;
- Assisting with the development of new patient database using REDCap and Open Specimens platforms;
- Overseeing informed consent procedures with research participants;
- Assisting the Facilities Manager with the design of experiments and/or development of new techniques and SOPS;
- Planning and performing experiments, utilizing complex procedures or techniques, troubleshooting problems, collecting, recording, analyzing, and interpreting results;
- Coordinating, monitoring, and ensuring the implementation and enforcement of Biobank safety rules and procedures;
- Collecting bio specimens from patients in the clinics or laboratories;
- Processing a vast range of bio specimens, preserving, and retrieving them according to corresponding SOPs and protocols;
- Assessing the quality of bio specimens and conducting cell and tissue isolation and culture procedures;
- Organizing shipping of bio specimens according to MTA and biospecimen transferring SOPs;
- Overseeing the operations, testing, and maintenance of core Biobank equipment and ensuring adequate inventory of supplies and materials;
- Providing training to undergraduate students to perform fecal specimen processing.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline;
- A minimum of three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own;
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion;
- Training and working knowledge in REDCap and/or other platforms is an asset;
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
- Ability to work with others in a calm, courteous, and effective manner;
- Training and experience in phlebotomy and obtaining patient consent for research will be considered an asset.
