Job Overview


We are looking for a Payroll Administrator to join our Payroll team, part of the Shared Services team within Human Resources.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, HR Shared Services, this role supports payroll administration for 1400+ employees across Canada.

At MEC, we use UKG Pro for our HRIS and payroll system.

Experience using this system is considered an asset, but not essential if you have experience completing full-cycle payroll in equivalent HRIS such as Workday or ADP.


Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Process biweekly payroll for all MEC employees to ensure wages are paid correctly and on time.
  • Review hours in UKG UltiPro time & attendance to summarize accurately and interface over to payroll system correctly.
  • Calculate overtime in accordance with Provincial Employment Standards and MEC policy.
  • Transmit the direct deposit file to bank on time.
  • Follow up on payroll discrepancies and take corrective action as needed.
  • Backup payroll data regularly.
  • Process all HR/Payroll related paperwork and process changes.
  • Ensure employee personal data is correct including TD1 and banking information, member numbers.
  • Support team with addition and termination of employee member number for staff discount. Reconcile regularly.
  • Ensure employee leaves, transfers, terminations, and status changes are updated correctly
  • Verify salary changes, and ensure retro pay is calculated correctly
  • Ensure employee terminations are processed accurately, and any outstanding deductions are accounted for.
  • Correctly set up garnishment schedules.
  • Support the payroll team by maintaining employee programs (i.e. Professional Development, Tuition Reimbursement, etc.)
  • Maintain and update banked overtime, sick and vacation accrual allowances every pay period.
  • Support with Statutory Remittances (CRA, WCB, Health Taxes, Garnishments).
  • Assist in yearend and T4 preparation and distribution.
  • As needed, support with Occupational Health & Safety claims.
  • As needed, support our Payroll & Benefits Specialist with benefit administration which may include benefit premium deductions, premium collections, calculating maternity/parental topup, processing leave requests, reconciling benefit accounts, etc.
  • Handle all jobrelated tickets in the HR ticketing system and respond in a timely manner with a professional level of communication. Review inboxes regularly to support employee questions.
  • Complete other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum educational requirements include a degree or diploma in a related field plus a CPA level 1 designation.
  • Experience working across multiple provinces, union/nonunion, and an understanding of employment standards.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, work in fastpaced environment and meet tight deadlines.
  • A solid communicator who is an enthusiastic and contributing member of the HR team, engaging regularly with our MEC staffers in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work weekends when needed to accommodate payroll schedule. Some overtime required due to payroll deadlines.
