The Office of the Vice-President, International (OVPI) engages with institutions in regions, countries and cities of strategic priority and leverages international opportunities for research, scholarship, learning and mobility.

By providing leadership on international initiatives, the Office develops and maintains key international partnerships.

In working towards the priority of internationalization, the Office engages in the following activities:

  • Leads and coordinates a range of international activities to build and enhance the University's international relationships;
  • Promotes deeper engagement with key regions, countries and institutions;
  • Facilitates international collaboration;
  • Promotes U of T's global profile and presence in key regions;
  • Manages institutional international visits and plans outbound missions;
  • Supports the integration of mobility, recruitment, research, academic programs, government and advancement/alumni and divisional initiatives; and
  • Provides recommendations and models for international collaboration and partnerships.

Your opportunity:


Under the general direction of the Program Manager, International Relations (Africa), the Regional Lead (Africa) independently provides strategic research and analysis of a wide range of issues/trends in higher education and institutional-specific research in Africa.

The incumbent focuses on the University of Toronto's international profile and international linkages, providing marketing and communication materials to audiences within the University and to outside partners; conducts thorough reviews and analyses of international partnerships as they relate to the University's provincial and federal government priorities, in support of the development and implementation of the University of Toronto's Africa strategy and partnerships in Africa.

The incumbent is also responsible for providing logístical support for incoming and outgoing delegations; with an understanding of protocols, greets and accompanies members of incoming delegations.


The incumbent is expected to develop a specialized and detailed understanding in Africa higher education trends, funding opportunities for Africa collaboration and mobility schemes, and maintain the University of Toronto's international profile.

The incumbent independently liaises with counterparts and senior members in the Office of the President, Vice-Presidents' Offices and divisional leaders across three campuses, as well as all relevant international offices, to understand and consolidate international activities related to the University.

The Regional Lead (Africa) must exercise considerable interpersonal sensitivity and diplomacy in building and maintaining relationships across the institution.

The incumbent will assist with projects on a wide variety of issues and topics related to the international priorities that flow from work and decisions made by the President, Vice-President and Vice-Presidential committees.


The incumbent is responsible for four main areas:

  • Compiling information on University of Toronto's links with key African countries and regions in order to put together content for online marketing communications, material for outreach, briefing materials, country profiles and news items for internal and external audiences;
  • Research on, and analysis and monitoring, of developments in the Africa arena related to higher education, strategic partners and research support of international dignitaries and delegations;
  • Support the development of region-specific strategies in collaboration with university faculty, colleagues, regional advisory councils within the university;
  • And assists with special projects on a wide range of topics. In addition, the incumbent will assist in the development of Africa institutional agreements and divisional agreements as needed.

  • Implementing and executing qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.
  • Producing complex statistical information. Synthesizing technical, qualitative and contextual research data.
  • Preparing draft statistical reports and summaries from data collected. Liaising between departments.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with contacts whose cooperation is important to the University.
