Basic Function:
The Conservation Science Booklet promotes public awareness of conservation, education and research at the Toronto Zoo; and the Zoo's commitment to natural habitat protection, restoration, and the environment shared between people and wildlife.
The Conservation Science Booklet outlines the various programs active at Toronto Zoo for the preservation of endangered species, conservation of habitats, and education and research programs.
It reflects important information about the operation of the Zoo, including the people, the animals, donors and details on the financial health of our organization.
It is distributed to the general public and used as an educational tool at all levels, from primary to university and graduate levels.
The publication is used for general information and to promote conservation awareness at presentations, lectures, seminars, workshops, etc., in the community, nationally and internationally.
Responsibilities:
- Review previous years' publications
- Attend various Zoo activities i.e. behindthescenes events, tours, Browse Collection, Animal Welfare Assessments, etc., for inclusion in the publication.
- Liaise, interview and consult with staff throughout the Zoo site i
e:
Conservation Science, Veterinary Science, Welfare Science, Reproductive Sciences, Nutrition Science, Wildlife Care, and researchers.
- Develop flat plan for publication and assign word counts
- Develop content to highlight the Zoo's activities within the community and Canada as a whole for events such as National Aboriginal Day, release of endangered Ontario species (e.g. Blanding's turtles), and awards/ recognition for assistance with endangered species such as Ontario bats.
- Determine new key programs/initiatives to highlight
- Research various documents to investigate information to include in the publication. i.e. Turtle Island Program (First Nations), Adopt-APond, conservationeducation and conservationresearch Projects, Animal Enrichment, SSP Programs, Green Programs, etc.
- Capture photographs and create design elements to incorporate a creative design to make the publication attractive.
- Create and prepare layout and design concept for the publication.
Qualifications:
- Enrolled in or a graduate of a Zoology, Biology, or Environmental Studies program of study
- Excellent English, written and verbal skills
- Creativity skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
- High proficiency in computer skills: Adobe InDesign (necessary to develop publication) and Adobe Photoshop, as well as familiarity with Microsoft Office
- Publisher, Word, and Excel.
