The opportunity:


The Floor Clerks in the Course Materials Department of the Bookstore provide knowledgeable and courteous service to customers in person and over the telephone, accurately shelve and maintain sufficient level of stock, and keep the Department tidy and clean.

As front-line staff, it is imperative that they display a positive attitude/energy and consistently demonstrate positive behaviour and outstanding customer service.


They must become familiar with required course materials and have the ability to communicate information effectively and efficiently to all customers in a diplomatic, positive and tactful manner.

They are responsible for performing with a high level of accuracy and customer service, answering customer inquiries which involves accessing course information from the Bookstore Data Base System.

Responsible for taking telephone orders, inventory counts, keeping buyers informed of stock levels and stocking shelves which requires heavy lifting.

May also be required to work in Call Centre, Pickup Window, Merchandise Distribution, Art Supplies, General Reading, Campus Deliveries, and door as needed.

Good attendance record and punctuality required.

The qualifications and experience we're looking for:

  • One year directly related recent retail sales and customer service experience, preferably in a bookstore environment.
  • Familiarity with university courses and courseware materials.
  • Knowledge of the Missouri Book System (MBS) Database System a definite asset.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of retail principles and how to provide consistent, excellent customer service.
  • Ability to follow instructions and operate a computer required.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform efficiently in a fastpaced environment with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate positively and effectively with the public is essential.
  • Must have a positive attitude toward coworkers, the workplace and the tasks of the job.
  • Must demonstrate positive body language and consistently have a positive demeanor.
  • Must be naturally approachable, open to feedback, and consciously aware of the impact of attitude on others.
  • Must be able to understand, interpret and explain effectively in English.
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties as assigned, in particular, standing for long periods of time and some heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs).
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality is required.
