Position Overview


The University of Calgary neurostimulation research leaders have established a comprehensive and integrative research program - the Non-Invasive Neurostimulation Network (N3).

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Transcranial Electric Stimulation (tES) technologies are the central component of the research program with integration of additional and emerging technologies.

The goals of this network are to build a supportive community of brain and mental health researchers undertaking collaborative, interdisciplinary research projects utilizing non-invasive neurostimulation technologies to both better understand brain disorders across the lifespan and modulate the brain toward better functional outcomes.


The N3 Research Associate will be responsible for the operations of the non-invasive stimulation laboratories located at the Alberta Children's Hospital, with additional responsibilities across the broader network.

The position is based at Alberta Children's Hospital, and will liaise with the N3 scientists at the Mathison Centre and Foothills Medical Center.

This position reports to the N3 director Mathison Centre, and dotted line to the N3 Scientist based at the Foothills Hospital.


While overseen and directed by the N3 directors, the N3 Research Associate is expected to work with a significant level of independence and judgment.

The N3 Research Associate should be capable of obtaining the necessary information and knowledge to develop procedures, implement, analyze and interpret research program data in a self-directed manner.

Work intensity is variable and may, on occasion, require extended hours.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Manage daily operations of non-invasive neurostimulation systems including in-scope supervision of laboratory staff and trainees
  • Responsible for management and maintenance of the TMS, tDCS, and other brain stimulation equipment and computer software
  • Together with other N3 scientists, manage and maximize the productivity of the use of the N3 laboratories located ACH, Matheson Center and Foothills Medical Center
  • Collaborate with N3 investigators on brain stimulation related projects
  • Develop research methodologies, as well as testing and evaluating new or emerging research technologies (equipment, software tools)
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications
  • Involve in data extraction, management, security, and analysis. This includes familiarity with neurophysiology and developing scripts using programming softwares for data analysis
  • Provide support and mentorship to student trainees at all levels (undergraduate to postdoctoral and fellows) on data collection, analysis and interpretation
  • Actively participate in organizing N3 activities such as N3 research day and educational workshops
  • Recommend changes and improvement to methods, procedures and practices within the TMS laboratories
  • Extensive understanding, continued learning and development of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD degree in Neurophysiology, Neurosciences, Biomedical Engineering, Physiology or similar required
  • 3 to 5 years of related research experience in neurostimulation research required
  • Experience with brain imaging/navigation systems such as BrainSight, data acquisition and electrophysiology systems a major asset
  • 1 to 3 years of coaching or supervisory experience of student trainees in research projects a major asset
  • Comfort and proven ability in communicating and interacting with adults, and children (including those with disability) is a major asset
  • Experience in research design, documentation and results interpretation, advanced analysis and biostatistics, as well as authoring and reviewing research journal articles
  • Ability to implement and integrate technological systems with mínimal supervision
  • Ability to provide advice and technical assistance to other team members
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and standards relevant to different noninvasive brain stimulation techniques
  • Demonstrated communication, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills with professional demeanor
  • Ability to work both independently, and in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate academic research aims and results to a wide variety of audiences
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in analytical, statistics and programming software such as Matlab, R, Python etc.
  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills
