Clinical Coordinator to support
Operating Room team at
Mount Sinai Hospital.


The Clinical Coordinator will play an integral role in facilitating efficiencies and patient flow through the perioperative area including the main OR, Cystoscopy and EOPS.

This role will assist and support the Patient Care Manager (PCM) in the operations of the various units as needed including communication and escalation of issues as they arise.

The Facilitator will also ensure data entered into the OR Scheduling system is accurate and will assist in monitoring the data and utilizing this for analyzing and supporting process improvement initiatives.

An important aspect of this role will be to help support operating rooms to run as efficiently as possible and that flow from the OR to the PACU is a seamless transition.


Responsibilities Include:

  • Daily coordination of unit activities for the perioperative services including scheduling of emergency cases, patient flow, appropriate use of material and human resources and support of the patient experience
  • Facilitates the running of Operative Rooms for maximum utilization by:
  • Ensuring the timely completion of cases on a daily basis in collaboration with Surgical and Anesthesia representatives
  • Prioritizing emergency cases according to set criteria and in collaboration with Surgical and Anesthesia representatives
  • Addressing scheduling conflict for surgical cases on a daily basis and establishes liaison with nonutilized time coordinator
  • Manages the OR scheduling system which includes:
  • Review of on-time starts, late starts, data analysis and performance improvement
  • Ensuring data quality and reviewing monthly reports;
  • Collating and analyzing performance indicators such as workload data, agency use, overtime, long procedure, twoteam procedure
  • Review OR bookings to ensure rooms are booked appropriately, critical care capacity will not be maxed
  • Utilizing various tools to coordinate the communication and flow of patients throughout the perioperative area, including the elective and emergent cases
  • Participating and supporting process improvement projects to improve patient care and experience
  • Supporting and maintaining the philosophy, goals, objectives and standards of the hospital
  • Promoting critical thinking and analytical skills in practice
  • Mentoring and teaching nursing staff, students, residences when appropriate
  • Assisting in planning and coordination of educational and experiential opportunities for staff growth and development
  • Collaborating with PCM and other nursing leadership personnel regarding unit needs, staffing and patient practices
  • Collaborating in the development and maintenance of the nursing workload system
  • Maintaining adequate supplies and functional equipment to ensure appropriate equipment/instruments for cases
  • Participating in multidisciplinary and departmental committees as well as meetings at the unit level for all category of personnel and more particularly attends the daily bed meetings

  • Supporting effective employer/employee relations through the knowledgeable interpretation of hospital policies, procedures and collective agreements
  • Establishing links with other departments as required
  • In collaboration with the PCM, participates in unit assessments, interventions and in Quality and Risk Management initiatives as it relates to patient safety and patient and family concerns


Job Requirements
  • Successful completion of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from a recognized educational institution required
  • Current certificate of registration in good standing from the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • 35 years' of recent and related Operating Room experience required
  • Certified in Perioperative Nursing CPN (C)
  • Membership in professional nursing and other related organizations
  • Previous experience as a Charge Nurse or other Nursing leadership role with ability to direct, support, instruct and lead others
