The Youth Settlement Worker provides settlement support for newcomer immigrant youth between the ages of 13 and 24 with after school programming, field trips, and activities including summer programming.

The worker provides direct assistance, referrals, and advocacy in a variety of areas to help youth meet their settlement needs, particularly in the areas of training and education, recreation, community involvement and mental health supports.

The worker also is involved in community engagement and broader community-wide initiatives impacting immigrant youth.

The Settlement Youth Worker in the Orientation/Youth Program will work with newcomer youth to assist them in their settlement and integration to life in Chatham-Kent and/or Canada, This position reports to the Executive Director, through the Settlement Services Coordinator.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct intake and assess eligibility of newcomers who are interested in youth programming.
  • Conducts outreach to newcomer youth and their families
  • Welcome and provide initial and ongoing needs assessment to immigrant youth.
  • Assess educational, social, emotional challenges, gaps faced by newcomer youth, and identify approaches to address those issues.
  • Orient, assist and advocate for newcomer youth in meeting their settlement needs including, but not limited to; accessing training and education and establishing social networks.
  • Accompanying clients to appointments as needed; and providing itinerant services in local schools.
  • Support and encourage youth participation in community engagement processes.
  • Provide information to clients, including via social media, and make internal and external referrals for newcomers and immigrant youth as determined by their needs.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of innovative youth program development activities, including group programs for newcomer youth.
  • Develop close connections with and maintain ongoing relationships with local organizations and institutions to establish strong service bridging and to support broad based, relevant, community engagement.

  • Work with staff and partners to develop sensitivity specifically related to newcomer youth issues and cultural differences
  • Maintain accurate service records and program documentation in a timely manner
  • Develop and maintain communications tools, including on social media.
  • Conduct outreach to promote the Youth Program and Settlement Support Services to newcomer youth, including delivering information sessions in different community sites.
  • Support newcomer youth through working with other program and settlement staff to resolve issues as they arise. Prepare and maintain newcomer files.
  • Organize public education activities.
  • Organize and participate in events that promote social interaction between youth and members of the established community.
  • Develop, plan and deliver group activities, networking sessions, tours and field trips for newcomer youth and volunteers, based on expressed interests in focus groups and individual assessments
  • Conduct program evaluation and provide regular reports to management. Prepare and deliver monthly stats of clients served
  • Liaise and communicate with other ALL's programs and departments' staff.
  • Refer newcomer youth to other services as appropriate. Liaise with Community Programs staff and Youth services sectors to remain current in service standards.
  • Conducts evaluations of groups and collects data for further program development
  • Submits advance requests, receipts and program expenses
  • Inputs data into appropriate forms, reports, and databases and produces monthly reports
  • Attends workshops and training design for staff development and growth

  • Works during both regular and extended hours of operation in locations identified by the Centre. This job requires flexible hours and evening work.
  • On occasion, other temporary duties may be required.
