What You'll Do:The Disability Benefits Payment Specialist is in charge of reviewing and setting up new disability and life waiver claims, confirming members' eligibility, calculating disability benefits, and processing payments. They are also the main point of contact with School Boards and responsible for handling Member inquiries about the LTD claim status and policy provisions.
  • Calculates and processes disability payments.
  • Investigates and gathers necessary information for calculations, ensuring accurate disability benefits are computed. Reviews policy contracts and details provided by the plan administrator to calculate the benefit elimination period and benefit adjustments. Calculations involve rehabilitation, all-source maximum, offset, cost of living, appeal retroactive payments over and underpayments, and true-ups.
  • Sets up and reviews disability new claims and life waivers to ensure all documents are submitted and completed correctly for processing. This includes verifying eligibility and contacting appropriate parties for outstanding information.
  • Ensures that claim systems are updated with precise financial information for the Disability Life reserve feed.
  • Offers information to school board and union plan administrators, members, affiliates, and other individuals in the Group Life and Disability Claims department by verifying claim information and responding to various inquiries and information requests.
  • Conducts follow-up on LTD matters by reaching out to relevant parties via letter, email, or telephone.
  • Manages telephone inquiries from Members regarding their long-term disability benefits and claim status through the GL&DC telephone queue.
  • Maintains a detailed log and diary system to monitor payments, follow-ups, calculations, and claim status.
  • Reviews group policies and departmental manuals to correctly apply contractual provisions and claims administration processes.
  • Prepares and processes responses to Members, Unions, and School Board representatives following established standards.
  • Initiates the new claim application process, including coordinating, preparing, and distributing claims kits.
  • Handles the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) disability application process.
  • Maintains confidentiality of LTD claim information to safeguard operations.
QualificationsLet's Talk About You: This is the distinctive mix of skills and experience we are looking for in an ideal candidate:
  • Three to five years' experience in short-term or long-term group disability claims insurance with an understanding of policy language and application.
  • Experience in short- or long-term disability calculations and payments.
  • A proficiency in mathematical calculations/applications and successful completion of a mathematical aptitude test.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Outstanding communication skills and the proven ability to interact effectively with all levels of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills to handle competing priorities, including project management skills.
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree or equivalent business experience.
  • Ability to Speak in English and French would be considered an asset.
