Utility Locator, Full-time, Permanent

Number of positions: 10 (ten) positions available

Hiring date:
End of February 2024

Schedule:
Monday through Friday availability, overtime availability, and compensated on-call hours.

Primary Responsibilities
The Utility Locator's role is pivotal in marking underground utilities while upholding rigorous quality standards.

Responsibilities encompass providing locating services for residential and commercial customers i.e., Locating high-voltage electrical cables, water lines, sewer lines, steam lines, gas lines, telephone lines, and more, for a prescribed geography.


This position offers a comprehensive benefits package, a company-matched RRSP, a company-provided vehicle, along with a laptop and cell phone.

The hourly wage for this position is now $22.00 with potential for increases and overtime available.

The training class for this opportunity is scheduled to commence
February 28th, 2024.

Other duties include but are not limited to:

  • Researching and analyzing data related to excavation locations, construction prints, and plans to determine the actual lines of requested utilities
  • Operating various electronic devices like cell phone, computer systems, apps, including a receiver and transmitter designed to facilitate the locating and verification of underground utilities such as gas, phone, and fiber optic cables.
  • Marking utility lines using spray paint or colored flags
  • Completing locates according to highquality standards and schedules
  • Employing a health and safety mindset with customers and communities
  • Consulting with contractors, developers, builders, regarding locations of underground utilities
  • Preparing reports and documentation verifying marked utilities
  • Safeguarding of company equipment and vehicle.
  • Have a valid '5' class Driver's License
  • Have a clean three (3) year Driver's Abstract as this position includes a company vehicle for business purposes only
  • Capability to work independently outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • The ability to distinguish colors for marking utilities.
  • The ability to work independently and manage a workload to meet necessary deadlines
  • The ability to problem solve and demonstrate good judgment as situations dictate
  • The ability to physically walk in and out of ditches, on uneven surfaces, lifting and loading equipment up to 9kg (20 lbs) in and out of the vehicle several times per day, carry/swing 20lbs of equipment while walking
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Customer service skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, colleagues, and the public.
  • Intermediate computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Previous experience in locating utilities is advantageous.
  • Prior background in construction/landscaping/surveying is a plus.
  • Familiarity with reading blueprints is beneficial.
  • Confined Space Entry training is an asset.
