Department Name:

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine - LLS Core Lab - MLAs

The Laboratory Assistant performs data entry, specimen preparation and a wide range of duties to support diagnostic testing processes. The Assistant applies specific knowledge and skills to perform simple diagnostic testing or complex procedures.

Regular Part-Time

Rate of Pay:
$27.85 per hour - $32.11 per hour

Hours of Work:
Up to 45 hours bi-weekly

Qualifications:

  • Meet the educational requirements specified by the Medical Laboratory Professionals' Association of Ontario (MLPAO formerly OSMT) or the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) for Medical Laboratory Assistant
  • Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate from Medical Laboratory Professionals' Association of Ontario (MLPAO formerly OSMT) or Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)
  • Minimum of six (6) months previous laboratory experience
  • Demonstrate excellent computer and keyboarding skills (Cerner preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory protocols and terminology
  • Demonstrated knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology
  • Attention to detail and accuracy essential (transcription of information, numbering, filing of specimens)
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, develop and maintain effective relationships within healthcare teams
  • Demonstrated manual dexterity
  • Proven excellence working in a team environment with strong interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated strong problem solving skills, organization, ability to prioritize
  • Demonstrated flexibility and the ability to manage change in a dynamic environment (work assignment, procedures, priorities)
  • Demonstrated ability to operate small equipment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the principles of patient and family centred care
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the LHSC employee core competencies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis

Immunization Requirements:

  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/ Diphtheria/Polio; Meningitis.
  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing (two step) and COVID vaccine series.
