Department/Faculty Summary


The Community-University Partnership for the Study of Children, Youth, and Families (CUP) is a unique collaboration between the University of Alberta, community agencies, and organizations in and around Edmonton and across Alberta.

Reporting to the Dean of School of Public Health and the CUP Steering Committee, CUP creates research and evaluation environments where community, government, university, and funding partners collaborate to access and use the best possible evidence to inform effective practices, programs and policies.

CUP uses a community-based participatory research approach that is mutually beneficial, informed by multiple perspectives, and scientifically rigorous.

CUP's Steering Committee provides guidance and direction to CUP and includes significant representation from the University of Alberta and from organizations or agencies outside of the University.

The Steering Committee is co-chaired by one university member and one community member.

The CUP team includes researchers and research assistants from various faculties across the University of Alberta, including the School of Public Health.

CUP's tenured faculty and staff are sought-after leaders in community-based participatory research, knowledge mobilization, and the scholarship of engagement.

Position Summary


Reporting to the Director of CUP, the Public Policy and Evaluation Research Associate will work with an interdisciplinary team of faculty, staff and students, community organizations, government partners and funders working toward changes in the public policies, systems, and environments to promote well-being of children, youth and families, with a particular focus on early learning and care.

This Research Associate will serve an integral role working closely with the CUP leadership team, Steering Committee, Secretariat, and partners to (1) lead, guide, and develop public policy research and evaluation, (2) mobilize evidence into public policy dialogues across the social ecosystem, (3) enhance public policy knowledge, capacity, and dialogue specific to early childhood development (e.g., early intervention, early learning and care, etc.), and (4) expand and nurture CUP's public policy networks.


The Public Policy and Evaluation Research Associate will be accountable to the Director of CUP for a portfolio consisting of the following.


Duties

  • Research and Evaluation functions, including monitoring and synthesizing public policy research and activities, trends, and issues specific to early childhood
  • Lead the development of public policyrelevant research, and/or evaluations that inform the early childhood field and social serving sector.
  • Build opportunities for students (undergraduate and graduate) to participate in communityengaged policyrelevant projects.
  • Identify and respond to requests for proposals and pursues funding opportunities with foundations, Tri-Council or other funding sources to support emerging projects.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with community, industry, university, and government stakeholders in early childhood development and public policy regionally, provincially, and internationally.
  • Engage regularly with CUP stakeholders and partner networks to understand how evidence can inform the improvement of early childhood initiatives.
