The Economic Studies department at Desjardins consists of a team of economists and strategists. Strategists are members of Economic Studies, reporting to the Chief Economist. Under the direction of the Head of Macro Strategy, strategists are expected to generate high-quality analysis and commentary at a sustained frequency, touching on relevant macroeconomic and financial market themes. Although the position is primarily attached to the Foreign Exchange trading desk, the research audience includes all of Capital Markets, as well as the Desjardins Group Treasury. The role requires close collaboration with teams from various trading desks and involves client and media exposure. The Economic Studies department is split between Montreal and Toronto.

Responsibilities

- Conduct research of foreign exchange markets with the goal of producing analytical notes on a regular basis and making presentations to clients.
- Stay abreast of major developments and variables relevant to foreign exchange markets.
- Monitor key risks and anticipate new themes.
- Offer synthesized analysis and outline the key indicators to monitor during the session on the Foreign Exchange team's morning call.
- Under the supervision of the Head of Macro Strategy, provide hot takes to Capital Markets clients after the release of relevant data or announcements
- Based on rigorous analysis, identify attractive risk-return trade opportunities and propose strategies to clients.
- Collaborate with colleagues in Economic Studies, and the FX Sales and Trading team
- Travel to meet clients with sales coverage.
- Build, manage and update chart decks for client presentations.
- Employ, improve and develop tools to effectively analyze data.
- Ensure accuracy of all produced research content before it's released
- Build and strengthen ties with a variety of key market players
- Respond to various requests for information from both outside and within the firm

Qualifications

- A minimum of eight years of relevant experience in macroeconomic and financial research.
- Graduate/Masters degree in economics or finance
- Central bank, sell side, buy side or independent macroeconomic research firm experience is preferred
- Trading experience will be considered
- In-depth knowledge of the Canadian (and G10) economy
- Mastery of the analytical framework and theoretical underpinnings of foreign exchange markets
- Practical understanding of foreign exchange markets and market infrastructure

Specific Requirements

- Strong communication skills in both French and English, both oral and written due to the nature of the duties or work tools or because the position involves interactions with bilingual-speaking partners, members and/or clients.
- The work arrangement for the position is Hybrid, the position can be based out of either Toronto or the Montreal locations

Responsabilités

- Effectuer des recherches sur les marchés des changes dans le but de produire des notes analytiques sur une base régulière et de faire des présentations aux clients.
- Se tenir au courant des principaux développements et variables concernant les marchés des changes.
- Surveiller les principaux risques et anticiper les nouveaux thèmes.
- Proposer une analyse synthétisée et souligner les indicateurs clés à surveiller au cours de la session lors de l'appel matinal de l'équipe des changes.
- Sous la supervision du responsable de la stratégie macroéconomique, fournir des analyses à chaud aux clients des marchés des capitaux après la publication de données ou d'annonces pertinentes.
- Sur la base d'une analyse rigoureuse, identifier les opportunités de trading
- Collaborer avec les collègues des études économiques et de l'équipe de vente et de négociation des devises.
- Se déplacer pour rencontrer les clients dans le cadre de la couverture des ventes.
- Construire, gérer et mettre à jour des tableaux pour les présentations aux clients.
- Utiliser, améliorer et développer des outils pour analyser efficacement les données.
- Veiller à l'exactitude de tous les contenus de recherche produits avant leur publication.
- Construire et renforcer les liens avec une variété d'acteurs clés du marché.
- Répondre aux diverses demandes d'information provenant de l'extérieur et de l'intérieur de l'entreprise.

Qualifications requises

- Au moins huit ans d'expérience pertinente dans le domaine de la recherche macroéconomique et financière.
- Diplôme d'études supérieures/maîtrise en économie ou en finance
- Une expérience dans une banque centrale, un service d'achat ou de vente ou un cabinet de recherche macroéconomique indépendant est souhaitée.
- Une expérience dans le domaine de la négociation sera prise en compte.
- Connaissance approfondie de l'économie canadienne (et du G10)
- Maîtrise du cadre analytique et des fondements théoriques des marchés des changes
- Compréhension pratique des marchés des changes et de l'infrastructure du marché

Exigences spécifiques

- Solides compétences en communication en français et en anglais, tant à l'oral qu'à l'écrit, en raison de la nature des tâches ou des outils de travail ou parce que le poste implique des interactions avec des partenaires, des membres et/ou des clients bilingues.
- Le poste est hybride, il peut être basé à Toronto ou à Montréal.
