The Marine Institute enjoys an outstanding reputation in Canada, across North America, and internationally, as the most comprehensive institution for education, training, research, and industrial support for ocean industries. THE OPPORTUNITY

The Marine Institute is currently searching for a visionary, innovative, and passionate individual to lead its School of Ocean Technology. This is an opportunity to help shape the future workforce, engage in exciting ocean research and development, and to foster strategic partnerships with academia, industry, and governments both locally and globally. The School of Ocean Technology offers undergraduate certificate, diploma, degree, and graduate degree programs focused on leadership, remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles, and ocean mapping and technology management. The school also has a growing research presence (including a Canadian Research Chair in Ocean Mapping) with increasing numbers of research based graduate students. In addition to its academic programs, the School of Ocean Technology includes the Centre of Applied Ocean Technology that collaborates with industry and others on the development and application of ocean technology for the practical benefit of all sectors of the marine community.

THE CANDIDATE

Reporting to the Marine Institute's Associate Vice-President (Academic and Student Affairs), the Head of the School of Ocean Technology is a senior leadership position within the Marine Institute responsible for the development of a vision, strategic direction, and the day-to-day leadership of a high-performance team, empowered to enrich academic programs, research, and industry partnerships for the school. Through a solid entrepreneurial mindset, the successful applicant will develop and maintain relationships with community, industry, academic, and government partners to ensure continued effectiveness and efficiency of academic programs and research activities. This position requires a decisive person with demonstrated leadership abilities such as critical thinking, effective communications, and conflict resolution, with the ability to harness and market the school's programs, personnel, and assets. The position requires an individual with extensive knowledge of the local, national, and international ocean technology sector as well as insight into emerging trends.

The ideal candidate must be a collegial and collaborative professional with excellent interpersonal and communication skills who can foster a diverse operational and academic environment, solve problems, and think progressively. This knowledge and experience would normally be gained through the completion of a graduate degree combined with a minimum of 10–15 years experience in progressively responsible leadership positions. In the context of this role, experience related to ocean or marine technology may be considered an asset. Applicants with an equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
