What can I expect to do in this role?: You will:

  • prepare audit plans
- determine audit approach
- determine extent of tests to be conducted to ascertain level of compliance
- conduct in-depth audits and prepare and present audit findings
- meet with taxpayers and their representatives to discuss the audit findings, review the assessment proposal and negotiate payment
- prepare audit working papers

How do I qualify?:

Mandatory:

You have obtained the following accreditation:

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA)

Program:
Successful completion of Modules 1 through 12 of the CPA Prep program; or

  • Certified General Accountant (CGA)

Program:
Successful completion of Levels 1, 2 and 3; or

  • Certified Management Accountant (CMA)

Program:
Successful completion of 9 courses at the Pre-Professional level, including 3 accounting courses; or

  • Academic Equivalent: Successful completion of 10 courses of a recognized university/community college program plus or including courses in Introductory Financial Accounting, Intermediate Financial Accounting, and Auditing.

Technical Knowledge:

- you have demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of field auditing, financial statement analysis, accounting theory, principles, systems and procedures, and knowledge of general business financial operations, taxation and business management practices
- you have knowledge of relevant provincial tax legislation, inter-jurisdictional agreements, branch policies, rulings, directives, guidelines and administrative practices
- you have knowledge of a variety of computer software to access relevant accounting software to understand taxpayers' computerized accounting records, prepare correspondence, and prepare computerized audit working papers and other schedules
- you can gain knowledge of ministry-approved systems (e.g. OntTax), relevant internal and external databases, and desktop software

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

- you have effective communication and interpersonal skills, to provide assistance to taxpayers and/or their representatives, encourage and promote voluntary compliance, educate taxpayers in the requirements of the legislation, and provide alternatives for taxpayers to fulfill their responsibilities
- you have effective oral and written communication skills to discuss technical aspects of tax legislation and accounting and auditing requirements, conduct effective interviews, and prepare audit documents
- you have interpersonal skills to effectively manage client relationships and promote understanding and acceptance of the audit findings by taxpayers and their representatives, specifically in areas of non-compliance with the tax legislation, and the resultant assessment or reassessment
- you can deal effectively with disputes, and adversarial and confrontational situations arising from taxpayer objections or challenges

Research and Analytical Skills:

- you have research, analytical and investigative skills to plan and perform field audits, analyze documents and business records, determine tax liabilities, identify and resolve compliance problems, and participate in detailed projects to identify non-compliance
