Symtech is currently seeking a Health and Safety Director to oversee the health and safety initiatives for both the electrical and mechanical sectors of our operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive safety programs to maintain compliance with regulations and promote a culture of safety excellence across all areas of our business.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer (COO), this individual manages Health & Safety for all site and office employees throughout Canada and the United States. This individual plays a pivotal role in ensuring the well-being of workers, preventing accidents, and maintaining compliance with safety standards. Their commitment to safety contributes significantly to the success of electrical construction endeavors. This individual will represent the organization in all safety related matters, in offices and on sites. This individual will work closely with the Human Resources Manager, Manpower Manager, and other managers to ensure compliance across multiple working locations. The Health & Safety Director sets safety goals, monitors performance evaluations, and ensures effective communication within the team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

➢ Develop, implement, and manage health and safety policies and procedures specific to electrical and mechanical construction projects. Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, codes, and standards governing safety in the construction industry. Ensuring consistent implementation across the organization.

➢Provide guidance and support to project managers, supervisors, and employees on safety-related matters.

➢ Build and maintain strong relationships with General Contractors, Safety Managers, Safety organizations such as regulatory bodies, industry associations, and clients.

➢ Communicate safety concerns, risks, and action plans with all relevant internal and external stakeholders.

➢ Conduct regular safety audits and inspections at construction sites, offices, and equipment. Identify potential hazards, assess risks, and recommend corrective actions. Collaborate with Directors and supervisors to address safety concerns promptly.

➢Conduct safety training and education programs for employees to increase awareness and knowledge of safety procedures.

➢Allocate resources (financial, human, and technological) to support safety initiatives.

➢Continuously monitor updates in health and safety regulations and industry norms. Adhere to applicable standards to maintain compliance.

➢Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including management, HR, and operations teams, to promote a safe working environment.

➢Monitor and analyze safety metrics to identify trends, areas for improvement and develop strategies to address them.

➢Analyzing data, identifying trends, and implementing corrective actions to ensure continuous improvement.

➢ Accident Prevention and Response, oversee accident prevention measures.

➢ Lead accident and incident investigations, and near-misses promptly. Complete accident reports and recommend preventive measures. Identify root cause analyses to prevent recurrence and improve safety performance.

➢ Supervise subcontractors and contractors to ensure adherence to safety protocols. Monitor subcontractor safety performance and address any deficiencies.

➢ Ensure all personnel wear appropriate PPE (e.g., helmets, gloves, safety glasses) at all times. Conduct regular safety meetings to reinforce PPE usage.

➢ Develop emergency response plans for electrical construction sites. Coordinate evacuation procedures and first aid protocols.

➢ Specifically focus on electrical and mechanical construction safety practices. Promote safe work practices related to electrical and mechanical installations, wiring, and equipment.

➢ The duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. Other duties will be assigned based on the position's role within the business unit.

COR CERTIFICATION:

➢Ensuring that audits are conducted accurately and consistently and assessing the performance of auditors.

➢Develop and deliver policies, procedures, educational programs, reports, or promotional material related to COR.

➢Interface with clients and auditors to address queries and provide guidance.

➢Analyze certified COR employer performance trends data to identify trends and areas for improvement.

➢Strategically align the COR program with the organization's overall safety strategy. Collaborate with senior management to integrate COR objectives into the company's safety culture.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

➢ Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, engineering, or a related field

➢ Professional certification in Health and Safety (NCSO, CRSP)

➢ COR Internal Auditor certification

➢Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in health and safety management, preferably in the construction industry.

➢ Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and standards applicable to both electrical and mechanical operations.

➢ Demonstrated ability to delegate and influence others to achieve safety objectives.

➢ Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, with a track record of effectively addressing safety challenges.

➢ Business acumen to understand, interpret, and implement leading and forward-thinking Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to an industrial safety approach.

➢ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization.

➢ Proven leadership ability and experience managing safety programs across multiple locations or business units.

➢ Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.

➢ Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.

➢ Strong administration and organizational skills.

➢ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

➢ Ability to interface with all levels of staff in a professional manner.

TRAVEL:

➢20-80 % travel is required for this position.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

➢On-site conditions: Walking or on your feet for long periods of time, high levels of noise, weather and temperature can vary depending on the season, mainly outdoors.
