Technician III for our
Medical Genetics department.

  • Follows Universal Body precautions in handling all specimens received in the laboratory
  • Performs automated and manual DNA and RNA extraction from blood, fresh tissue, fluids and formiln fixed paraffin embedded tissue samples
  • Performs quantification procedures as outlined in the laboratory procedures manual to aid in diagnosis and management of patients
  • Accessions and logs specimens into the Laboratory Information System in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Management System
  • Prepares samples to send out to other laboratories
  • Labels patient samples, documents and transfer tubes/vessels with accession numbers
  • Scans requisitions into the Laboratory Information System
  • Prepares documents for transfer to a storage facility
  • Practices sterile technique
  • Sets up, feeds and maintains blood culture samples
  • Performs blood culture harvest
  • Assists in Inventory Control of reagents and supplies
  • Prepares reagents and solutions applicable to tests performed
  • Prepare QC aliquots Operates, and performs routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and reports any malfunctions to the Technologists
  • Performs quality control checks, preventative maintenance procedures and basic troubleshooting on extraction instruments
  • Prioritizes work and contributes to meeting the operational targets of the department
  • Assists with training and orientation of new staff
  • Reports unresolved problems to the senior technical staff
  • Prioritizes work and responds to urgent or unpredicted demands for specimen processing or testing
  • Reads and maintains understanding of relevant policy and procedure manuals
  • Assists in the maintenance of the work station. Maintains a clean and tidy work area
  • Monitors inventory and supplies
  • Knowledgeable of Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (W.H.M.I.S.) and accessibility of Material Safety Data Sheets (M.S.D.S.)
  • Knowledgable of Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations and guidelines
  • Participates in annual Safety programs (W.H.M.I.S., Fire Prevention)
  • Exhibits a cooperative attitude with other staff, congeniality, flexibility in hours of work, reliability, punctuality, ability to work at a variety of duties and flexibility in learning new procedures
  • Other duties as assigned


 Job Requirements
  • Graduate of a Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent (e.g. Bachelor of Science)
  • Certification of Medical Laboratory Assistant (OSMT) or equivalent (e.g. Bachelor of Science)
  • 6 months 1 year of experience in genetics techniques required
  • Knowledgeable of safety practices when handling biological specimens
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance record
  • In accordance with accreditation standards, employment is conditional upon applicants demonstrating proof of visual colour discrimination ability pertinent to the essential duties of the job
