Assistive Technology Specialist

Assistive Technology program: The Assistive Technology Specialist supports children who use

assistive technology (AT) in the classroom, including augmentative-alternative communication (AAC),
audiology and vision equipment; provides professional development and orientation to staff and
families regarding AT/AAC equipment; tracks and maintains equipment; and maintains AT referrals
(enter in database, set up files). They work collaboratively with other Low Incidence team members
to conduct equipment trials, collect data, build capacity in classrooms, and complete documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support therapists and child development facilitators in providing children with practice using assistive
- technology tools and strategies (skill development).
  • Develop and demonstrate activities to classroom team to target use of materials, strategies and tools.
  • Provide orientation to AT equipment and demonstrate use of equipment in the classrooms
  • Assist with development and support of interactive classroom activities using AT software/Smart


Board, etc.
  • Administer accounts for shared software such as Boardmaker Studio and iTunes.
  • Research features of new equipment.
  • Receive purchased equipment, add inventory numbers and enter into database.
  • Maintain equipment library/inventory sign out and return status.
  • Recall all loaned equipment at year end and check function.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain AT equipment.
  • Receive referrals, enter information into database and set up AT files/documentation.
  • Maintain, print and share AT caseload lists with AT therapists.
  • Maintain regular communication with therapists and managers.
  • Conduct equipment trials and record data to help determine the appropriate levels for individual
- children and advise team members.
  • Develop materials, using appropriate software to meet individual needs of child/student and/or
classroom plans.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience with assistive technology and augmentativealternative communication is

- a requirement.
  • Experience working with school aged children/students and working with children/students with
- disabilities is an asset.
  • Knowledge of speechgenerating communication devices and augmentativealternative

- communication strategies.
  • Ability to use own initiative in undertaking tasks, carrying out the program plan, communicating and

- updating team members.
  • Flexible approach to working in a variety of environments and a variety of children/students, team

- members and families.
  • An understanding of children/students with disabilities and Developmentally Appropriate Practices.
  • Licensing: Valid Alberta Driver's License and a clean driving record.
