Summer Camp - Dedicated Support Staff


The Dedicated Support Staff is specifically employed to work directly with children and youth (ages 4-15) who require additional support.

They engage camp participants in interactive activities including organized arts and crafts, singing, sports activities, swimming, games and field trips, while maintaining a safe environment.

Dedicated Support Staff may be assigned to any of our BGC Durham summer camp locations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide supervision dedicated to individually assigned campers.
  • Ensure a safe and comfortable environment for the camper.
  • Work with individuals who are physically impaired, sensory impaired, have speech and language difficulties, are emotionally vulnerable, have behavioural difficulties, or have a combination of these exceptionalities.
  • Assist in developing, planning and organizing specialty instructions to accommodate campers to ensure an inclusive camp experience.
  • Model and practice HIGHFIVE
  • Principles of Healthy Childhood Development (Participation, Play, Mastery, Friends, and Caring Adult).
  • Provides guidance and support to fellow staff, and volunteers to ensure an inclusive camp experience.
  • Applicant must be able to prepare and deliver daily activities based on the theme and age of camper assigned.
  • Applicant will use a variety of tools and techniques to ensure the camper has a successful experience.
  • Applicants must be available to attend ALL online and inhouse trainings and staff meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with children with exceptionalities.
  • Excellent communication, programming, and leadership skills.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Behaviour Management Systems, and/or Crisis Intervention Training certification is considered an asset.
  • Valid First Aid & CPR-C Certification.
  • HIGH FIVE certification is considered an asset.
  • Positive, patient, and caring attitude combined with a willingness to work with children who have exceptionalities.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Required to work outside, will be required to swim.
  • Follow all operating procedures and safety policies of BGC Durham
  • Required to deal courteously and effectively with the general public, staff and other departments.
  • Upon hire, completion of HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development, Standard First Aid and CPR-C and submission of a Vulnerable Sector Screening are required.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be available to work the duration of the contract, in full.
  • Hours of work will be between 7:00AM 6:00PM, Monday to Friday.

Start:
July plus training hours scheduled prior to camp)
End:August 23, 2024

Wage:
$17.00-$19.00 (to commensurate with experience)
