The Polysomnographic Technologist works under the order of a Physician, Program Manager and the professional guidance of the Professional Practice Leader for Respiratory Therapy, but without the general supervision of a Polysomnographic Technologist. The Polysomnographic Technologist performs routine respiratory care and polysomnograms for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep/arousal disorders in accordance with established policies, procedures, clinical pathways and professional standards.

What you'll do

Perform full polysomnography studies and detailed respiratory assessments as defined by the standards committee of the Canadian Sleep Society and the Canadian Thoracic Society. Receive and prepare patients for polysomnographic studies by performing duties such as receiving requisitions from physicians, reviewing patient case history and assessing the nature of the problems to determine process and initiates sleep study accordingly. Interview patient and family, explains procedure, prepares patient for study procedures, connect patient to a variety of monitoring devices, and monitor patient's comfort throughout the procedure. Conduct various polysomnographic related tests involving non-invasive techniques such as electroencephalography, electroculography, electromyography, electrocardiography, multiple sleep latency and respiratory tracings on patients. Operate a variety of sleep study monitoring devices, calibrate and adjust equipment throughout study. Keep close surveillance on patient's cardio-respiratory status throughout the polysomnographic study which might require medical intervention. Formulate and generate preliminary computerized and graphic polysomnographic study reports from collected data. To facilitate the identification of dysfunction in sleep/wake cycles, the diagnosis of breathing disorders during sleep, and the evaluation of these disorders.

What you bring

Diploma in a health care discipline such as respiratory therapy or electroneurophysiology technology from an accredited institution. Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGTTM). One year's related experience in sleep study work or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

You also have the ability to:

Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines and function efficiently despite interruptions and workload fluctuations. Collaborate effectively with all team members. Think critically. Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to operate all pertinent respiratory related equipment. Carry out the duties of the position. Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents – including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study – and how they intersect across the health care system.
