About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the Manger of Research and Analysis, you will work with a multidisciplinary team that provides analytical, business, and research insights to inform decision-making, policy development, and strategic planning. This position plays a key role in expanding the Department's capabilities to drive insights by incorporating a broader use of varied data resources.

Primary Accountabilities

As a Research and Statistical Officer, you will be responsible for research and statistical analysis in the areas of civil and criminal justice. You will design, execute and report results of research using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, analyze and interpret complex data, and provide strategic advice and recommendations based on analyses to support policy decisions, program development, and implementation.

In this role, you will:

Leverage structured and unstructured data for analytical insights using a variety of internal and external sources; Apply data visualization techniques to present results of statistical analyses; Conduct research; Prepare briefing materials; Participate in evaluation processes; Collaborate with academic researchers in mutually beneficial learning opportunities and participate in departmental and cross-jurisdictional working groups as required.

Qualifications and Experience

You have a completed master's degree in a related discipline such as Criminology/Social Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, or Computer Science with 5 years of related experience; or a completed bachelor's degree in a related discipline such as Criminology/Social Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, or Computer Science with 7 years of related experience. An equivalent level of education and related experience may be considered.

As a successful Research and Statistical Officer 4, you have demonstrated skills in research and planning, are familiar with computerized information systems and research databases, and are able to analyze and interpret large volumes of data; Possess excellent verbal and written communications skills, strong interpersonal and leadership skills. Sound judgement, interpersonal skills, and adapting information to staff at different levels is essential; Have exceptional problem-solving skills, enjoy working in an innovative environment, and require minimal supervision; Have a general knowledge of the Nova Scotia justice system, including relevant legislation, policy and programs.

The following experiences are considered assets:

Experience using Tableau; Leading large projects using statistical programming languages (, Python or R); Completed advanced analytics coursework;
