Position Summary:


The Career Development Centre exists within the Teaching & Learning portfolio that engages students and alumni in their career development as an integral part of the Laurier experience.

This encompasses delivery of comprehensive programs and services that support experiential learning, career decision-making, employment preparation, facilitation of connections with the employer community, and pursuit of further education opportunities.


Specific programs and services include:

individual consultation and workshops on career planning, resumé writing, job search strategies, interview skills and further education; a Career Resource Centre; comprehensive employment services for full-time, summer and part-time opportunities for students and alumni; volunteerism; career-integrated learning in conjunction with campus partners; online resources; numerous events such as career panels, employment recruiting sessions, Job Fairs, Further Education Fair and Laurier Experience Record.


Reporting to the Associate Director:

Career Development & External Relations, the Career Consultant is accountable for co-ordinating the provision of career development programs and services for Laurier undergraduate and graduate students, alumni and staff.

Specific to this role is the assessment of client needs; specialized and diverse expertise in career management strategies; awareness of the stages of career development based on individual client needs; career education research and staying current on career development theories and approaches; development and delivery of career planning and employment preparation programs through individual appointments (in-person and online) and workshops to address the unique needs of undergraduate and graduate students; the development of print, webinar, social media and resources; and the establishment and maintenance of relationships with internal and external stakeholders and staff.

Services are offered primarily on the Waterloo campus but also at Laurier Brantford, Kitchener and Toronto (MBA) on a limited basis as needed.


Accountabilities:

Career Consulting:

  • Deliver career and employment consulting including the administering and interpretation of personality and interest inventories and assessments and incorporate these results into career consulting, job search and professional skills sessions. This role also includes providing a dropin service, where undergraduate, graduate students and alumni can have a shorter appointment concerning a career related question.
  • Support clients in making meaningful career choices through assessing their values, interests, personality and skills; and relating these to opportunities for employment, further education and/or training. The consultant assists clients in making informed decisions, develops strategies to carry out career plans and advises on how to present themselves effectively throughout the employment planning process.
  • Support students and alumni in developing their career strategy by communicating various tools and frameworks to help them develop focus in terms of career goals and a feasible action plan to transition from university to further education or employment; or to move within or out of their current workplace.
