Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.

Your role

As Communications Specialist, Indigenous Outreach and Engagement, you craft and implement a plan so the newly established Indigenous Office can build relationships with key constituents from coast to coast to coast, inside and outside the organization. You assess gaps and opportunities for two-way engagement with First Nations, Inuit and Métis rights holders, communities, and organizations. You leverage communications channels and tools to share information, obtain feedback, participate in key events and support reporting on the implementation of the CBC/Radio-Canada National Indigenous Strategy. Reporting to the Senior Communications Manager, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), you will collaborate daily in English and French with other communications professionals, translators, and graphic and web design specialists to produce and publish content on the intranet and our website.

You will work closely with the Indigenous Office, and also other individuals and teams across CBC/Radio-Canada. Lastly, you're passionate about leveraging communications to enhance stakeholder engagement.

The context:
As the national public broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada is committed to reflecting the diversity of Peoples and regions across this land. We seek to fulfill this responsibility in an ethical manner that respects, reflects, and amplifies the diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis experiences. This requires strong and healthy relationships with Indigenous Peoples and individuals. These relationships are cultivated daily within our workforce, with those whose stories we share and in our partnerships as a public service organization and cultural institution.

In this role, you will be expected to:

  • Develop and nurture relationships by mapping key Indigenous constituencies from coast to coast to coast and supporting the communications of an outreach plan.
  • Create and implement communications in English and French that ensure all levels of our workforce understand and adhere to the vision, mission, and pillars of the National Indigenous Strategy.
  • Develop internal and external communication tools to provide greater visibility to projects that respect, reflect, and amplify the diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis experiences (e.g., internal memos, newsletters, key messages, FAQs, virtual town halls, in-person workshops, web pages, social media posts, infographics).
  • Draft and edit communications for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis governments, stakeholders, Canadian government agencies, staff, and management to help increase the visibility of CBC/Radio-Canada and the Indigenous Office's work.
  • Conduct research and advise on best practices for relationship-building with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis rights holders and communities.
  • Assess the effectiveness of communication and relationship-building initiatives and propose ways to improve.
  • Coordinate efforts to expand the availability of documentation in Indigenous languages and ensure the quality assurance of all documents produced.
  • Coordinate efforts to ensure consistent language and terminology (research and validate terms, develop internal lexicons, support translators, etc.).
  • Oversee project management and follow up with everyone involved to deliver outputs and activities according to established timelines (e.g., content creators, HR professionals, translators, web designers).
Qualifications and Experience
  • Three to five years of experience in Indigenous relations, community engagement, communications, or a university degree in communications, journalism, or social sciences.
  • Experience writing content/strong writing or reporting skills.
  • A connection to or previous experience working with First Nations, Inuit, or Métis communities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis governments, cultures, territories, engagement practices.
  • Strong cross-cultural communication skills.
  • A belief in creativity and storytelling as a tool to strengthen relationships.
  • English/French, both spoken and written (i.e., an ability to collaborate daily on projects with people using either language).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals and groups from a range of professions and expertise.
  • Flexibility and adaptability when faced with changing priorities or performing tasks outside your area of skills.
  • Ability to work independently, plan, deliver, report and respect deadlines.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
