Coding Specialist and Outpatient Coding Lead - Clinical Utilization Analytics
Permanent Full - Time
The Coding Specialist and Outpatient Lead, in addition to functions as a Coding Specialist, leads, performs, coordinates, and monitors day-to-day operations related to NACRS coding to ensure timely CIHI/MOH submission and maintain data quality. You have deep understanding of NACRS coding and abstracting. The Team Lead conducts training of new employees, performs quality assurance chart reviews to ensure employee competency and offers continuing education. Across all areas of accountability, the Team Lead identifies areas for improvement to support optimal efficiency and operations.
Primary Responsibilities:
Perform tasks with accountabilities as articulated for a Coding Specialist, recognizing the hybrid leadership function of this position Manage coding assignment, coordinate team efforts to close month-end on time Monitor and correct ADT errors & ERNI time stamp errors, reconcile NACRS volume (MRN, REG error,) Act as subject matter resource to NACRS for both internal and external questions When coding volume calls for Team Lead support, complete coding according to CIHI and internal coding Guidelines Mentor and train novice NACRS coding specialists Perform internal NACRS coding audits when applicable Research questions as they relate to NACRS coding and compliance and make recommendations for coding policies and procedures to ensure coding consistency Identify and recommend new items to provide additional education/coding instruction and increase coding efficiency Follow hospital guidelines to communicate diagnoses and procedures with program and clinicians when questions arise and/or clarification is needed Assist in the development of processes and procedures to facilitate optimal operations within the Coding team and departmentWhat must you have?
A certified member of CHIMA in good standing (CHIM) Demonstrated strong skills and experience with leading & developing operational processes related to coding workflows Demonstrated strong skills and experience in supporting the orientation, development and coaching of indirect team members Demonstrated strong skills and experience communicating technical requirements or standards to operational and leadership teams Demonstrated strong skills and experience assessing workload volume, managing expectations of contributors and planning for efficient service delivery A passion for clinical coding, high comfort level and interest in leading and teaching Strong understanding of data governance principlesWhat else do you bring?
5 years' experience in a clinical coding role, preferably focused on Day Surgery, Emergency and other nationally and provincially required ambulatory activity Ability to consult and set priorities that align with the organization's goals Strong knowledge of clinical data sources, availability and resources establishing coding standards (Epic, OnBase; and coding standards or requirements from CIHI, the Ministry of Health, Ontario Health and other relevant agencies) Awareness of key health care performance measures (clinical, financial, utilization, efficiency) associated with ambulatory coded datasets Informed and keeps up with the latest industry trends and best practices that is subsequently imparted on the workflows and standards Strong attention to detail and effective decision making, project management and negotiation skills Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills (written & verbal) Ability to establish and maintain a collaborative, service-oriented relationship with internal and external stakeholders Ability to work outside regular business hours as required Proven attendance record Demonstrates behaviours consistent with Mackenzie Health's Commitment to Caring Models behaviour that is aligned with the values of Mackenzie Health – Excellence, Leadership and Empathy.
