Community Leaders' role is essential in providing a positive residence experience by fostering community, providing academic support, and being attentive to safety and security of residents.

CLs will also respond to incidents in residence and complete a variety of administrative tasks such as filling out reports, auditing, and attending meetings.

At times, the CLs will assist with facilitating events in residence and will provide the Housing Operations Coordinator with information about trends for the development of targeted programming.


CLs will participate in an on-call rotation working approximately every third evening and every third weekend in an equal share with other CLs.

During this time, CLs will be required to remain on or near campus property and respond to routine situations such as students being locked out of their room and the occasional emergency situation such as a fire alarm.


Community Leaders (CLs) report to the Housing Operations Coordinator and serve as upper-year mentors to the students who live in residence.

CLs help residents understand and abide by the Residence Contract, Residence Community Standards and policies.

Responsibilities:

  • Residence Community Development_
  • Consistently role model appropriate and healthy community behaviors which contribute to a positive and safe residence environment.
  • Mediate community conflicts between residents, particularly roommates.
  • Actively foster a sense of safety for diversity and inclusion within residence.
  • Assist residents with identifying their values, needs, and goals for the residence community.
  • Be aware of general trends in their designated community such as common policy violations, stressors, etc. and relay this information to the Programming Assistant.
  • Gather feedback and ideas about programming from residents and relay this information.
  • Provide support to the Programming Assistant with running and advertising events as needed.
  • Peer Mentorship and Support_
  • Maintain an active and positive presence in the residence community through formal methods such as office hours, community meetings and/or informal methods.
  • Provide support to residents through active listening, escalation, and resource referrals.
  • Maintain exceptional confidentiality in all interactions with residents, only sharing information with the Student Housing Management team.
  • Maintain a positive relationship and build rapport with each residence student.
  • Administration & Team Responsibilities_
  • Ensure health and safety standards are being observed in the assigned community and report on concerns as required.
  • Deliver reports to Student Housing Management including Incident Reports, Facilities Requests, On-Call documentation, and others as assigned.
  • Attend meetings as scheduled including weekly teammeetings and biweekly 11s.
  • Respond to all correspondence in a timely and professional manner.
  • Assist in midterm room inspections and resident feedback surveys as needed.
  • Assist the Housing team with Open Houses, residence tours and orientation as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Emergency & Conduct Response_
  • Participate in an oncall rotation to complete rounds of residence halls and respond to emergencies and/or Residence Community Standards violations.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of relevant campus policies and procedures while addressing emergencies and potential conduct issues.
  • Write timely, clear, and thorough incident reports.
  • Identify situations that require escalation per training and professionally involve other relevant campus and community supports (e.g. Manager On-Call, Campus Security, 911, etc.) and complete any relevant follow up with students and staff.
