Indigenous Internship Program


The Indigenous Internship Program (IIP) is a 12-month paid internship program designed to provide recent Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) post-secondary graduates, with the opportunity to gain professional level work experience and a pathway through which they can build and develop transferable skills that can be used to gain sustained employment in their field of choice.

You must self-identify as an Indigenous person to be eligible for this program.

The term Indigenous refers to individuals who identify as being descended from the original inhabitants (the first peoples) of what is now known as Canada.

In this context, Indigenous people are First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit.

What can I expect to do in this role?: Internship position with Ministry of Northern Development's Controllership team will be provided the opportunity learn of the OPS' financial management practices, specifically, quarterly forecasting of divisional budgets which includes payroll, IT, travel, and other direct operating expenses and supporting controllership tasks.


With this knowledge, you will provide a stewardship role over the financial management of the executive office and its branches ensuring that all necessary requirements are carried out as dictated by OPS financial directives.


As the Financial Management Intern, you will:

  • assist in the development of financial reports and estimates preparation
- contribute to the development and implementation of business planning and financial reporting in support of the monitoring and review of budgets and financial performance
- participate in financial and administrative projects/reviews and contribute to the development of internal communications materials and resources
- provide advice and support to staff on financial reporting and expenditure management processes

How do I qualify?:

Mandatory requirement:

  • You must have graduated or will complete the requirements to graduate with a degree, diploma or postgraduate certificate from a recognized or legally authorized postsecondary institution in the last five years (May 2018June 2023).
  • You must selfidentify as an Indigenous person.

  • You must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Knowledge:

  • You have knowledge of general financial and accounting principles, policies and processes, including budget and financial forecasting and estimates planning.
  • You have knowledge of general approaches and considerations for resource planning, business planning, program development and performance measurement.
  • You have knowledge of risk assessment and risk management principles to contribute to ministry assessments on financial and nonfinancial issues.

Analytical and problem-solving skills:

  • You can analyze financial information and provide input into business planning, expenditure management and financial decisionmaking processes.
  • You can assist in the analysis of ministry and program proposals for accuracy and completeness and consolidate and report program financial performance data, identify variances and risks, and areas for further analysis.
