The School of Environment and Geomatics is seeking an Indigenous instructor to teach in the second year of the environmental diploma programs (Forestry, Integrated Environmental Planning, Recreation, Fish and Wildlife). Reporting to the School Chair, the successful applicant will provide instruction in ENVR 250: Indigenous Rights and Environmental Management.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Provide classroom instruction to second-year diploma students and be available for student consultation. Provide in-person classroom and lab instruction on: Diversity of Indigenous culture and practices.Legislation, court cases and treaties related to indigenous rights and titles in Canada and British Columbia.Indigenous and Western approaches to natural resource management.Creating authentic connections with Indigenous peoples that foster relationship building and respective engagement and collaboration. Ensure effective safety procedures are applied as appropriate, particularly in field labs. Develop and deliver teaching strategies and assessments that meet course outcomes and promote learning. Evaluate students, including providing constructive and meaningful feedback to students. Actively contribute to the college and the school, including participate in school and in all relevant program meetings. Develop or update curriculum according to Selkirk College values, policy, and procedures. Maintain positive relationships with colleagues and other members of college staff. Protect student information. Perform other duties as assigned by the School Chair or Dean.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Knowledge of best practices for teaching and learning, including indigenous pedagogy and teaching practice. Experience in cultural engagement protocols applied in natural resource operations. Demonstrated ability to teach: in-person course delivery experience.Previous use of a learning management system like Moodle.Demonstrated ability to work with students with diverse backgrounds and academic abilities.Teaching students at the post-secondary level. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Excellent classroom management skills. Ability to contribute to school and/or college initiatives. Provide personal experiences that build confident and imaginative learners ready to thrive in their community and in our dynamic world. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Strong competencies in working independently and as part of a team. Commitment to continuous learning. Create and maintain a positive and respectful learning environment.

Education and Experience

Master's Degree in a related field or equivalent with a minimum of three (3) years of specific, recent, applied experience in the indigenous environmental management field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Successful applicants will possess the required skills to instruct ENVR 250: Indigenous Rights and Environmental Management. Experience teaching at a post-secondary level is preferred with the ability to work with indigenous students. Established relationships with local First Nations preferred along with lived experience of working with and among Indigenous communities.

This is a short-term, part-time (28%) position commencing approximately August 6, 2024, and ending April 30, 2025. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Selkirk College Faculty Association Collective Agreement. The salary range is $2, $4,341.23 bi-weekly (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications and experience.
