The Opportunity:

The Rural Development Network, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing support towards sustainable rural communities across Canada, is seeking to hire an experienced Chief Executive Officer (CEO).


The Role:

Reporting to the RDN Board of Directors, the CEO is responsible for the success of RDN and to oversee the management and delivery of all aspects of RDN's mandate.

Overseeing a budget of $3 million, you will lead a staff of 35 which will include overall operations and strategic planning towards our next phase of development & growth.

As an advocate for rural communities, you will act as a representative of the RDN within said communities and with the Board of Directors.

Key responsibilities include ensuring the organization implements the long term strategy, securing funding, overseeing operations and administration, ensuring optimal use of organizational finances, staff and resources.

You will also provide financial leadership by managing budgets and monitoring long term strategic fiscal plans.

Location:
The RDN office is located in Edmonton, Alberta.

As we are working virtually, we will consider applicants located anywhere in Canada who are willing and able to work remotely.

  • RDN has a 35 hr work week. Staff have the option of working compressed work weeks, taking every second Friday off rather than working shorter days.
  • Flexible hours (daily start/end times), within RDN's core hours.
  • Completely virtual or hybrid work environment (dependent on location).

Responsibilities:

  • Report to the RDN board of directors and inform the board of internal and external matters affecting the organization
  • Develop and implement the vision and strategic plan for the RDN in conjunction with the board
  • Ensure that the organization's mission and mandate are being successfully executed
  • Develop and evaluate new and existing programs
  • Enter into contractual obligations with funders and subcontractors, on behalf of the RDN
  • Oversee the organization's financial accounts and budgeting
  • Ensure that RDN is a "going concern" through effective financial management
  • Oversee the hiring, termination and discipline of employees
  • Lead and motivate staff members and volunteers
  • Foster effective teamwork among employees
  • Develop and support fundraising activities
  • Oversee RDN communications activities, including website development and social media presence, and the creation of official documents, such as news releases, strategic plans and annual reports
  • Serve as the face for the organization in public relations matters, and represent the RDN at events
  • Expand public awareness of the RDN's work, services and efforts

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • At least five years of progressive senior management experience (previous experience as an executive director/CEO is preferred but equivalencies will be considered)
  • A related postsecondary degree (advanced degree is preferred)
  • Extensive project and research management experience
  • Experience working with Boards
  • Proven leadership ability
  • Strong advocacy, relationshipbuilding and public relations skills
  • Familiarity with and passion for RDN's issues and causes
  • Experience with rural, social and/or economic development
  • Excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • A creative, selfmotivated, and entrepreneurial spirit
  • Superior problemsolving, planning and organizational skills
  • Experience in coordinating finances for a notforprofit society, including budgeting and forecasting
  • Fiscal prudence, with a proven track record of obtaining grants and other funding
  • A persistent and positive outlook and a broad skill set
  • Integrity and a clear understanding of ethical business practices
  • Knowledge of the postsecondary system is an asset
  • A sophisticated understanding of, and passion for, rural development
  • Computer proficiency and understanding of technology (websites, social media, etc)

Education:


A Bachelor's degree in business, administration, urban planning, political science, social work, project management, finance, sciences or a relevant discipline is required; a Master's degree would be an asset.

Significant related experience may be considered in lieu.
