The South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE) practices the culturally responsive pedagogy approach in providing an inclusive, diverse, equitable, safe and healthy education that supports learning and success both personally and academically to the 59,000 residents of Lunenburg and Queens Counties, an area of 5,250 square kilometres and a total of 23 schools.

$93,468/yr (under review)

Qualifications:

  • An Undergraduate Degree
  • Degree or diploma in Human Resources Management (with a concentration in labour relations) or equivalent;
OR

  • B.Ed. and Masters in Administration or equivalent with management experience as well as significant knowledge, experience, and aptitude for human resources and labour relations matters
OR

  • Equivalent training and/or experience
  • CPHR designation preferred
  • Previous experience and demonstrated understanding of the public education sector, especially in a leadership role, preferred
  • Payroll/HR system experience, AESOP and SAP proficiency an asset.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience in increasingly senior leadership positions where there was a significant focus on labour relations
  • Minimum of 3 years demonstrated team leadership experience effectively supervising staff
  • Experience in conflict resolution
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to conduct workplace investigations
  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience working in a unionized environment
  • Working knowledge of legislation such as Human Rights Act, Labour Standards Act, Trade Union Act, Education Act, Workers' Compensation Act and Regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Etc
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc)

Task Dimensions:

Lead the HR team in effectively addressing labour relations and employment matters for all employee groups at the Centre for Education

For Example:

  • Focusing on providing expert HR leadership and expertise across the Regional Centre resolving systemic, process and daytoday issues in collaboration with leaders and other stakeholders on matters such as:
  • Union contract interpretation
  • Discipline
  • Performance management
  • Participating on a number of committees; such as Joint Occupational Health and Safety, Professional Development, Labour Management, etc.
  • Facilitating HR events such as participate in and coordinate job fairs;
  • Facilitating and participating in staff selection processes;
  • Acting on behalf of the Regional; Centre during collective bargaining and oversee first step grievances.
  • Ensuring HR processes are being effectively completed, including hiring and termination, respectful workplace investigations, attendance management, disability case management, accommodations, equity provisions and staffing for all schools and offices.
  • Oversee completion and reporting on annual Criminal Records Checks and Employee Declarations under Student Protection Policy.
  • Supporting the Director of HR in addressing systems concerns through the research, development and implementation of effective Human Resources policies, procedures and practices.
  • Leading the development and administration of the performance appraisals/growth planning process.
  • Modeling a strong work ethic; acting with integrity; respecting confidentiality, having a professional, relational, and collaborative style;
  • Actively remaining abreast if developing human resources issues and labour relations law;
  • Supervise the Administration of Injury on Duty Claims, Workplace Accommodations, Workers' Compensation Bureau Claims, Functional Assessment requirements, and Return to Work Plans;
  • Making evidencebased decisions; having effective communication skills (written and oral); and working well both independently, as a team lead and as a member of a team.
  • Complying with Occupational Health and Safety Act Regulations.
  • Performing other related duties as required.
