Women's Multicultural Resource and Counselling Centre of Durham (WMRCC) is a registered charitable organization, dedicated to providing trauma-informed counselling and support to women of all ages, youth, and children from diverse backgrounds to live a life free of violence and abuse, as well as to become economically independent. The organization works from feminist, anti-racist and anti-oppression perspectives, and is a centre for Worker Cooperative Groups' Development. This type of entrepreneurship model is called a sharing economy, solidarity and inclusive economy, gig economy, or platform economy.

PROJECT SUMMARY


This project focuses on developing 7 Worker Cooperative Groups in the business areas of childminding, sewing/designing, PSW, cleaner, artists, interpreters and translators and hairdressing.

Our aim with this model is to build an inclusive gender-based democratic economy and innovative entrepreneurship for newcomers/immigrants and women from equity-seeking communities to create opportunities and eliminate barriers.

This is a 4-year initiative with the anticipation of building on their collective strengths and resiliency to ignite social and economic change.

A democratic economy that drives innovation in building from the ground up and will work in partnership with many community organizations and institutions to accomplish this goal.


POSITION:


WMRCC is seeking to hire a Cooperative Development Coordinator to lead this project with the support of WMRCC's Executive Directors, Resource Staff and Volunteers.

The coordinator will work with diverse community resource individuals, such as facilitators, evaluator, mentors, consultants, and other professionals. WMRCC requires this individual to commit to the 4 years duration of this project. The project activities will be conducted both in-person and virtually.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supporting women in servicespecific groups to better understand the issues in their service areas and ongoing support to keep them motivated and focused.
  • Oneonone and group guidance on how to develop a specific cooperative group.
  • Accompaniment to different cooperative events across Ontario and Canada, with an opportunity to speak at various events and conferences.
  • Empowering women in developing leadership skills in selfadvocacy, negotiation, expanding social network, coaching, mentorship, and meeting diverse leaders and stakeholders in the field.
  • Supporting and guiding them in their areas of business development.
  • Working with different resource individuals/groups to ensure the success of the initiative, evaluator, consultant, facilitators, mentors, and community at large.
  • Organizing cooperative annual conferences.
  • Designing and developing brochures, banners, promotional materials, media work, and advocacy,
  • Liaison with other community initiatives.
  • Building and maintaining partnerships with other community organizations and groups.
  • Working in collaboration with other team members.
  • Organizing training and workshops including community events
  • Making sure that this project is widely advertised in the community using different mediums and media outlets.

INTERSECTIONAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong understanding of the unique needs of women and children from diverse backgrounds with lived experiences of trauma, mental health, and economically disadvantaged.
  • Knowledge of cultural and social issues affecting vulnerable members of the community and their families
  • Sensitivity to the impact of COVID19 and other social factors based on one's social location.
  • Knowledge of the community in which these members live, work and play.
  • Knowledge of local programs and resources available in the community to support them.
  • Experience working with vulnerable and underserved communities.
  • Ability to provide a variety of support.
  • Ability to work well with existing partners and building new partnerships.
  • Ability to provide services from feminist, antiracist, and antioppression perspectives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Related educational qualification and training in cooperative development and business development models.
  • More than 3 years experience in cooperative group development, cooperative management, education, and skills, including experience working with immigrant/newcomer women and those from diverse backgrounds.
  • This is a parttime position at 21 hours per week at $25 per hour.
