Reporter-Editor– Full-Time (Internal/External)

Location: Ottawa

Based in Ottawa, the successful candidate will join an esteemed group of multimedia journalists in our parliamentary bureau. Adept at both working sources and poring over documents, this reporter will bring a deep understanding of how and why decisions are made on Parliament Hill and a dogged determination to uncover the impacts of those choices on everyday Canadians. This reporter will join the bureau in its shared goal of providing the public and our clients with the best political coverage in the country.

Responsibilities:

1. Write, edit and gather multimedia content for CP's various services (print, broadcast and video)

2. Deliver exclusive, enterprise and investigative material on a frequent and regular basis

3. Report breaking news using all platforms including audio, video and social media

4. Collaborate with colleagues to develop and break stories, share sources and divide workload

5. Support other bureaus in handling federal politics

6. Distil large amounts of information to determine key and important information under time constraints

7. Occasional shift work required, including evenings and weekends

8. Occasional travel

Skills and experience required:

9. At least five years of solid experience in a real-time, digital newsroom

10. A proven network of sources in Ottawa

11. Excellent knowledge and demonstrated professional experience using different platforms, including broadcast, video and multimedia

12. Ability to work in intense working environment with a high degree of public scrutiny

13. Ability to work under extreme deadline pressures

14. Ability to make contacts and develop relationships with communities across Canada to better find and tell stories about the real-life impacts of political decisions

15. Ability to disseminate complex information to a general audience

16. Proven ability to write with flare

17. A strong background in political journalism with a track record for generating scoops

18. Excellent verbal and written communication in English. French skills would also be an asset

19. Ability to work both independently and within a team

20. Familiarity with access-to-information legislation and databases

21. Ability to edit and improve colleagues' work on short notice

22. Self-starter who can take initiative and develop story ideas independently

23. Ability to travel on short notice on an infrequent basis

Responsabilités :

· Rédige, révise et rassemble du contenu multimédia pour les divers services de la PC (écrit, radio et vidéo)

· Produit fréquemment et sur une base régulière des exclusivités, des articles de fond et des enquêtes

· Publie des nouvelles de dernière heure en utilisant toutes les plateformes, y compris l'audio, la vidéo et les réseaux sociaux

· Collabore avec les collègues pour traiter et publier des nouvelles, partager des sources et diviser la tâche de travail

· Appuie les autres bureaux dans le traitement de la politique fédérale

· Distille de grandes quantités d'information pour déterminer les informations importantes et essentielles dans des délais serrés

· Le poste prévoit des quarts de travail occasionnels, y compris en soirée et les week-ends

· Déplacements occasionnels

Compétences et expérience nécessaires :

· Au moins cinq ans de solide expérience dans une salle de rédaction numérique de temps réel

· Un réseau établi de sources à Ottawa

· Excellente connaissance et expérience professionnelle avérée de l'utilisation des différentes plateformes, incluant la radio, la vidéo et le multimédia

· Habileté à travailler dans un environnement de travail intense avec un fort niveau d'examen du public

· Capacité avérée d'écrire avec style

· Une solide expérience en journalisme politique avec des antécédents de publications d'exclusivités

· Excellentes qualités de communication verbale et écrite en anglais; des compétences en français seraient également un atout

· Habilité à travailler autant de façon indépendante qu'en équipe

· Bonne connaissance de l'accès à l'information et des bases de données

· Habileté à réviser et à améliorer le travail d'un collègue à court préavis

· Débrouillardise et esprit d'initiative pour avancer des idées originales de reportage

· Habileté à voyager à court préavis, peu fréquemment
