POS Biosciences Corp. offers state-of-the-art oil processing, concentration, and molecular distillation services designed to create value added oils and proteins. Headquartered in Saskatoon SK, POS is a trusted resource in plant-based bioprocessing.

The R&D Technician will report to the Principal Scientist, Innovation & Technology with direction and support also from others within the Technology and R&D teams. The R&D Technician is responsible for assisting with new product development activities, reformulation of existing products, shelf-life testing, and conducting taste panels. The role will be expected to build relationships internally (technicians, production operators, quality, regulatory, sales, and purchasing) as well as externally (customers' scientists).

Position Summary

The role of the R&D Technician is to assist in the creation of supplements and food for human and animal consumption. This individual must develop custom formulations based on customer needs and be able to understand and communicate all aspects of chemical, physical and sensory parameters.

Responsibilities & Expectations:

  • Develop supplements and food for human and animal consumption that meet all technical, chemical, and organoleptic qualities that a customer requires.
  • Understand and communicate all aspects of chemical, physical, and sensory parameters of preparations and finished products.
  • Follow internal trial productions for products still in development (feasibility) and/or pre-commercialization phase based on customer requests. This may occasionally include work outside of normal business hours.
  • Develop relationships internally (technicians, production operators, quality, regulatory, sales, and purchasing) and externally (customers' scientists).
  • Assist in improving skills by developing yourself and your team's knowledge, capabilities, and performance by strengthening competencies. Utilize goal setting and developmental target by using the PDS system. Continually improve performance through feedback and self-awareness.
  • Promotes applicable safety, regulatory, GMP requirements in the lab, and manufacturing facilities.
  • Documents all development work accurately. This includes written documentation of lab work, product showings, and plant trials in a timely manner.
  • Assists in writing of new policy and procedures as needed.
  • Ensure the work environment is safe with adherence to Personal Safety, Food Safety, Quality, and Environmental Policies and Practices.
  • Support activities including taste panel execution, sample preparation and analysis, and inventory management.
  • Drive continuous improvement in products and processes.
  • Follow all work instructions and provide feedback on laboratory specifications.
  • Assist with cleaning and organizing the lab. Provide input for lab design efficiency, ergonomics, and safety.
  • Assist with experimental design of shelf-life testing. Once a new product is approved, work with Quality department to prepare all samples necessary and conduct shelf-life testing.
  • Develop and maintain solid professional working relationships both inside and outside the company. Set a positive example and act in a manner consistent with company values.
  • Gains understanding and applies knowledge of ingredients, products, and manufacturing processes for the completion of projects.
  • With guidance, applies learnings, creativity, and technical knowledge to add value through innovation.
  • In addition to the responsibilities listed above, other duties may be assigned by your supervisor as dictated by business necessity.

  • Capable and willing to work with lab chemicals food ingredients and flavors.
  • Capable of lifting and or carrying up to 25Kg material.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including development and use of complex spreadsheets.
  • Detail oriented and demonstrated ability to perform work with high degree of accuracy.
  • Demonstrated creative talent and production knowledge.
  • Degree in Food Science, Nutrition, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or related fields.
  • 0 to 3 years' experience.
