The Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Lab Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The Lab Manager will be part of all projects of the Pediatric Onset of Neuromotor Impairment (PONI) Lab. The PONI-lab performs research with the goal to improve the care of people with cerebral palsy and other neuromotor causes of disability that originate in childhood. We lead projects aimed at understanding mechanisms of motor impairments and the impact of interventions and collaborate with others evaluating a variety of other projects relevant to individuals with pediatric onset of neuromotor impairments.
Our studies involve individuals of all ages (currently from 6 months of age to adults) and an array of physical, communication and intellectual abilities. Our staff have diverse backgrounds too including clinicians, engineers and people with lived experience. Therefore it requires a comfort in interacting positively with the breadth of individuals.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Communicate and educate patients and their families regarding the research
  • Obtain consent from subjects wishing to participate in the study
  • Database Management: create and maintain detailed management plans regarding data management, document management, and communication best practices
  • Technical support of all of the lab's major technical systems, including troubleshooting, procurement requirements, and maintenance.
  • Instrumented dynamometer: independently run and analyze experiments using this equipment, maintain dynamometer and all attachments in working order, create adaptations to attachments to optimize use in our patient population
  • Surface electromyography: independently perform experiments using surface electromyography, analyze and interpret data
  • Data Analysis: write and maintain custom data analysis software in Matlab
  • Assist with necessary University ethics applications/amendments and AHS operational approvals. Necessary study amendments completed independently. Within 1 year new study applications including development of informed consent forms, promotional material will be completed independently. Feasible suggestions for research protocols will be presented and protocols will be generated with minimal direction.
  • Liaise with all research team members and sponsor/other collaborators
  • Maintain research study binders with regulatory documents and patient data.
  • Keep electronic records of all study material including protocols, informed consent forms, questionnaires, renewals, modifications, etc.
  • Manage daily operations of the lab including training and support of laboratory staff and/or trainees, ordering and arranging supplies and equipment, coordinating meeting times and locations independently
  • Staff Management:
    • Responsible for working with Principal investigator to determine positions that would support the strategic goals of the Research group
    • Manages the creation job profiles, hiring, and onboarding of staff
    • Performs and engages staff in annual performance reviews
    • When required, performs disciplinary, including terminations, actions
    • Oversees the complete range of human resource management for operational staff

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor Degree - required
  • Graduate degree in Engineering or Neuroscience - recommended
  • Previous experience as a Research Coordinator for clinical research including participant recruitment - recommended
  • Experience managing in an Unionized environment an asset
  • 2-5 years of related experience in human research and/or with people with disabilities - recommended
  • Intermediate to advance computer literacy with MS Windows, MS Office suite - required
  • Database creation and management experience - highly recommended
  • Familiarity with at least one of the technical aspects of the lab is recommended. These include: instrumented dynamometers, non-invasive brain stimulation, analysis with Matlab, R and/or Python
  • Training in other aspects may be provided, but some experience in the field is preferred
  • Comfort and ability to communicate in English and interact with infants, children, teens, and adults (including those with an array of physical, communication and intellectual abilities) and family members is required
