The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Lab Manager, CPE R.I.T.S. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 24 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Lab Manager will report to the Senior Operations Manager, and work closely with the Department Head, Associate Head Research, and faculty members in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering. The primary purpose of the Lab Manager is to work on research projects with faculty members and researchers in the Department of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering. The major research themes in the department are advanced materials & interfaces, biochemical engineering, natural resources & resource extraction, sustainable energy solutions, environmental technology, and systems analysis, modelling & simulation. Strong time management skills and excellent customer service are required in order to perform effectively in environments with frequent workload changes and competing demands.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Leadership:

  • Management of a group of research staff.
  • Responsible for hiring, performance reviews and discipline of immediate team.
  • Act as a coach and mentor in training and development of junior team members.
  • Establishes departmental plans in order to complete projects and assignments.
  • Clearly define and communicate performance expectations to the project team.
  • Guides others in making difficult decisions.
  • Adapts plans and priorities to meet service and/or research challenges.
  • Represent the team to internal and external stakeholders.

Judgment and Decision Making:

  • Makes decisions that require development of new options to solve complex problems.
  • Responsible for making recommendations to policy and procedure which govern the research project or team objectives and implementation of any changes.
  • Promoting shared facilities to external academic and industry users, enhancing revenue generation from user fees.
  • Manage financial forecasting and reporting activities for RITS lab/program.
  • Providing feedback, advice and training related to researchers on all aspects of laboratory work, including operation of specialized instruments and equipment, safety processes and procedures, and good laboratory practice.

Communication and Scientific Contribution:

  • Explain difficult and complex concepts and influence others to adopt a different point of view, when appropriate.
  • Development of experimental research projects in collaboration with faculty members in the department.
  • The nature of the research will depend on the expertise of the Lab Manager but is expected to contribute to one or more of the department's research themes: Advanced Materials & Interfaces; Biochemical Engineering; Environmental Technology; Natural Resources & Resource Extraction; Sustainable Energy Solutions; Systems Analysis, Modelling & Simulation.
  • Collaboration with and support of researchers to enable them to employ shared facilities and specialized instruments to maximize the quality and impact of their research.
  • Managing shared research facilities in the department to ensure that they deliver high quality, professional services for researchers.
  • Coordinating with and supporting other shared facilities frequently used by researchers in the Department, including the Dynamic Imaging Lab, CERC Lab, EChemI Lab (TEM and XPS), and the Microsystems Hub.
  • Develop and implement laboratory/program policies, procedures, systems, standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Completion of a PhD level degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • More than 3 years of research experience including industrial research and development experience.
  • Research experience should be in experimental chemical engineering science, or advanced materials science / engineering, including characterization of materials such as catalysts, electrocatalysts, composites, and nanomaterials.
  • Eperience with research and development in an industry context is preferred.
  • Ability to able to independently develop, guide, and complete research projects.
  • Experience with providing analytical / characterization services to researchers, demonstrated effective, supportive communication and collaboration.
  • Highly effective time management and project management skills.
  • Ability to develop and manage a budget
  • Experience supervising, mentoring and coaching
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to solve complex problems.
  • Ability to multi-task and deal with multiple simultaneous priorities in an effective, efficient manner.
  • Knowledge of university infrastructure and research administrative processes is preferrable.
