The Department of Surgery in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Lab Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Manager of the Orthopaedic Trauma Research Program.

Our large program has a mandate of improving recovery after injury and surgery, development of a precision-medicine approach to reducing post-traumatic and post-surgical complications, as well as improving musculoskeletal health care delivery through local, provincial, national and international initiatives.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Accurately perform high level technical assays under sterile conditions with timely troubleshooting
  • Responsible for lab supplies and equipment procurement and operational management of precision equipment and processes: researching product availability/pricing, obtaining quotes, receiving order requests from trainees, submitting all orders through PeopleSoft, overseeing receipt of goods, managing inventory, and waste disposal
  • Operate and maintain complex technical equipment and conduct routine equipment quality control checks
  • Clinical sample processing and archiving
  • Lead plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and services
  • Project-based budget involvement including developing reports, tracking expenses, and reconciliation of accounts
  • Lead establishment of SOPs and recommend changes to methods, procedures, and practices within the lab
  • Accountable for maintenance of lab safety policy, as well as implementation and documentation which includes fulfillment of University requirements for self-inspections and all necessary documentation
  • Under limited supervision and direction, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Train and supervise other staff, students, and faculty in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols
  • Accountable for ensuring that laboratory and work area is clean and safe

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters Degree in Biological Sciences, Health Sciences, or a related field is a requirement. PhD is an asset
  • A minimum of 5 years of laboratory experience in an academic research laboratory setting is a requirement
  • Phlebotomy training is an asset
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques is required
  • Must be skilled in immunoassays measuring inflammatory markers using custom cytokine arrays
  • Knowledge of MesoScale or Luminex instruments, ELISA, and hemostasis analysis is an asset
  • Must possess willingness and experience to work with various human biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, urine, etc.)
  • Laboratory biosafety training, blood borne pathogens, WHIMS certifications are required
  • Strong understanding of research protocols and ability to adhere to policy are required
  • High level of resourcefulness and concentration are required
  • Ability to work independently with directives and minimal supervision is required
  • Experience in lab organization and maintenance of biosafety regulations is required
  • Must possess ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems consistent within a laboratory setting
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues is required
  • Organizational skills, professional attitude and work ethic, and good problem solving abilities are essential
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • Knowledge of research ethics certification through IRISS is an asset
