Position title

Cardiologist, Advanced Heart Failure/Transplant

Description

The Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute is looking for a full-time academic cardiologist at the assistant or associate professor level with a clinical and academic focus on Heart Failure and Transplantation with an estimated start date of July 2024.

The successful applicant would join a group of 43 cardiologists at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI). UOHI is a large tertiary centre providing cardiovascular care to Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is Canada's largest and foremost heart health centre. It employs over 1,400 physicians, nurses, researchers, technicians, allied health professionals and more. The Institute handles more than 235,000 patients yearly from across Canada.

The Division is renowned for delivery of outstanding cardiac care, excellence in education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels (recognized as a leading training program in Canada and internationally) and recognized internationally for its research in particular in electrophysiology, cardiac imaging, STEMI/ACS coronary intervention, valvular disease, cardiac transplantation and pulmonary hypertension programs among others as well as strength in heart failure and structural interventions.

Located at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the facility offers state-of-the-art catheterization (4) and electrophysiology (4) labs, and a dedicated cardiac imaging facility with PET, MRI, CT, SPECT and echocardiography imaging. The core facilities include 96 inpatient ward beds, an intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) with 14 beds, an intensive cardiac surgery unit (CSICU) with 27 beds, a Day Unit with 36 beds, a Reference Centre with 11 beds, and a Structural Procedure Unit of 6 beds.

The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually.

The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is TOH's research arm. It ranks fourth out of more than 600 Canadian hospitals for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. OHRI houses over 2,200 researchers, publishing more than 2,000 studies yearly, with hundreds being high impact publications (top 10% or citations) and places 5th overall in Canada for research funding.

The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 28 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.

The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada's top-tier medical faculties. The Faculty ranks 3rd in Canada for research intensity in Medicine/Science (Maclean's) and 4th in Canada for citations (2022 THE rankings). The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English-French) university in the world and the first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada. The Faculty of Medicine has a long history of conducting the highest quality basic and clinical research, in close partnership with affiliated hospitals and research institutes. The Web of Science recently published a list of the most highly cited researchers in the world, where seven out of eight researchers identified from the uOttawa are from the Faculty of Medicine. Together, these remarkable achievements are a strong testament to the competitiveness and excellence of our Faculty.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant would join a group of 4 advanced heart failure doctors, comprising the service at UOHI. The applicant would be expected to provide in-patient ward service and consultations for heart failure patients one week in 5, provide on call service for advanced HF/transplant and LVAD patients one week in 5, participate in advanced HF/transplant and LVAD out-patient clinics at least 1.5 days per week, possible participation in echo lab and/or cath lab (right heart catheterization and myocardial biopsy), and participate in teaching medical students and residents and fellows.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree, with FRCPC certification in Cardiology and have completed an advanced HF/transplant fellowship; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario.

Academic appointment ranking will be based on qualifications and experience, however, we are targeting applications from those who qualify for Associate Professor or above.

The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends.
