Sturgeon County is looking for a temporary, full-time, Conservation Program Coordinator in our Agriculture Services Department. The position is responsible for developing and implementing conservation programming for Sturgeon County, including the Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS) Program and the Wetland Replacement Program.
Conservation Program Coordination and Project Planning (60%)
Facilitates the establishment and implementation of agricultural conservation programming in Sturgeon County, including ALUS Sturgeon and the Alberta Wetland Replacement Program.
Participates in developing annual strategic goals for all conservation programing, including an annual ALUS Strategic Plan.
Develops and conducts baseline condition assessment criteria and a post-project monitoring program to measure the success of conservation programs, including but not limited to water quality assessments, wildlife assessments, riparian health assessments and range health assessments.
Establishes criteria for the eligibility of conservation programs and develops an evaluation system for completed projects to ensure the objectives of each project are achieved.
Engages with agricultural producers and other stakeholders to identify suitable projects for programs and supports participants in preparing project proposals, project budgets and other required supporting documentation.
Presents project proposals to the ALUS Partnership Advisory Group (PAC); Drafts and negotiates landowner agreements for project areas.
Supports producers with the implementation of approved projects and arranges for internal labour support and/or facilitates service contracts as required.
Defines scope of work and develops and implements project plans for successful delivery of the Wetland Replacement Program.
Organizes the procurement of consulting and construction services for the Wetland Replacement Projects as required through Sturgeon County Procurement Services.
Liaises with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, contracted Environmental Engineers, construction management personnel and construction contractors to ensure all requirements of the Wetland Replacement Program are met on Sturgeon County projects.
Researches and makes recommendations for the compensation structure of conservation programs and arranges for compensation for all projects in accordance with the approved structure.
Networks and enhances relationships with various partner organizations and agencies to support and advance conservation programming in Sturgeon County including educational and research institutions, watershed management partnerships, extension groups and other government and non-government agencies.
Adheres to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.
Adheres to all of Sturgeon County’s policies, bylaws, procedures and processes, as well as align work to the Sturgeon County values.
A diploma or degree in agriculture, conservation, or environmental sciences.
Class 5 Driver’s License with an acceptable Driver’s Abstract.
Strong knowledge of agricultural practices.
Strong knowledge of land and wetland conservation, reclamation, and restoration practices.
Knowledge of Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
Ability to communicate clearly and professionally verbally and in writing, including being adaptable, receptive, and timely when communicating with others.
Proficiency when using all Microsoft Office Programs (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, etc.).
