About the Role

We are seeking a visionary and talented Editor-in-Chief to lead The Northern Miner's editorial direction across both print and digital platforms. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the mining industry, exceptional leadership skills, and a passion for delivering compelling content that informs and engages our readership.

This is a full-time, permanent position with hybrid work arrangements, requiring to be in the Toronto office three days a week.

We'll trust you to... (Responsibilities)

Editorial Leadership

  • Oversee all content and design aspects of The Northern Miner for both print and online platforms.
  • Develop and implement editorial themes, feature stories, and regular columns that address industry concerns and trends.

Team Management

  • Collaborate with a diverse team including field editors, freelancers, column contributors, business contacts, freelance art directors, and publishers.
  • Ensure timely completion of each issue within budget constraints.
  • Train and mentor team members to enhance their skills and support their professional growth.

Audience Engagement

  • Continuously analyze user engagement and readership metrics.
  • Develop programs and content strategies to enhance audience growth and retention.
  • Expand the online audience through effective syndication channels and editorial initiatives.

Content Quality Assurance

  • Evaluate all communications for content accuracy, style, organization, and consistency.
  • Ensure all print and online materials align with the organization’s brand and standards.

Field Engagement

  • Travel to mine sites and manufacturing facilities as necessary to gather insights and report on industry developments.

Event Participation

  • Attend relevant industry events, fairs, and conferences.
  • Serve as an event moderator when required.

Sponsored Content Oversight

  • Assign and oversee quality control of sponsored content, ensuring that it is kept separate from editorial content, in line with industry standards.

Reporting and Administration

  • Prepare regular reports on editorial performance and initiatives.

Ad Hoc Duties

  • Undertake additional assignments and duties as assigned.

You'll need to be/have... (Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in editorial role, preferably within the mining, resources and/or business sector.
  • 5+ years in a leadership position managing editorial teams.
  • Proven experience working in both print and digital media landscapes.
  • Experience in commissioning and editing long-form and enterprise journalism.
  • ·Proficient in content management systems and digital publishing tools such as Adobe InCopy and WordPress.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.
  • Substantial grounding in mining and/or business journalism, with interest and experience in other subject areas.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading abilities.
  • Strong understanding of the digital environment, including SEO, analytics, data visualization, digital subscriptions, and social media strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills, ability to collaborate, network and foster relationships with internal and external stakeholder.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Passion for managing, mentoring, and training new journalism talent is an asset.
